Assignments for Sept.

28th

1, Questions and interesting points about the study:

 I could relate the core idea of the study which says setting up a needs analysis and
collecting different materials, needs and experiences for the course to make it more
useful for ESP students.
 I usually use the same method to get to know the needs of my students (e.g.
interviews, questionnaires etc.). Unfortunately, I don’t have the opportunity to record
their everyday situations, though they sometimes send me sample e-mails that they
usually have to deal with.
 The two-example situation proved that on a course you cannot prepare students for
every situation and you have to prove skills and methods how you can deal with these
unknown situations.
 A surprising finding was that these oral interviews are usually unreliable. Though in a
regular situation at the beginning of a course. Teachers have very limited set of tools
to measure the needs of students.

2, I usually ask my teachers if they have to use English for a special purpose to tell me their
own goals with the course (e.g. making presentations, presenting data, written
communication etc.). Then I ask about their habits and techniques of language learning (How
much time they have? What skills do they consider the best and worse? etc.) Finally, I would
like to know their personal preferences of language teaching (What type of exercises do they
prefer? Why they like it etc.).
