Established in 1921, ICS is the trade association for the shipping industry, its interests covering all aspects of maritime affairs, particularly marine safety, ship design and construction, pollution prevention and maritime law. Established in 1909, ISF is the employers’ federation for the shipping industry, representing its members’ interests internationally in relation to labour affairs, manpower and training issues. ICS and ISF have consultative status with several inter-governmental organisations, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO) ICS and ISF wish to acknowledge the assistance of Joseph M Hughes of marine consultants Global Maritime, Aberdeen, UK in the production of the guidelines on internal SMS auditing, and also to thank the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) for providing helpful comments on the text.
