Harmony Music Curriculum

Kindergarten ● Experience melody alone and melody with accompaniment


● Experience barred instruments and use proper mallet technique

1st Grade ● Perform speech ostinato as accompaniment


● Demonstrate simple bordun (chordal)

● Perform and label ostinato


2nd Grade ● Perform and label rounds
● Experience major and minor tonalities
● Demonstrate simple bordun (broken)

3rd Grade ● Perform and label melodic ostinato


● Perform and label descants
● Demonstrate simple bordun (crossover)

4th Grade ● Perform and label partner songs


● Recognize when chordal harmonies change
● Define chord as 3 or more notes sounded together
● Demonstrate simple bordun (level)

5th Grade ● Perform and label songs with two-part harmony


● Perform tonic and dominant chord to accompany a melody
● Play I-V and I-IV-V chords
● Experience 2-part and 3-part harmony
● Demonstrate moving bordun
