In the story “Hole in my life”, Jack Gantos goes through many hardships in his life. He
had many different opportunities to fix his life. Jack threw those chances out the window. I
believe the author wants to show that you should not take second chances for granted. One
example of this is when Jack got kicked out of his home by the bacon family. Another instance
of this is when Jack said he would go work with his dad, but then he blew it off right after.
Jack was kicked out of his home because he was messy, loud, and irresponsible. Jack
states “I’d go drinking with my friend…., play my stereo at full volume, and power barfed.”
(Gantos 14) His words seemed as if he didn’t care what he was doing to the Bacon family. He
acted as if he was in a hotel. This relates to the thematic statement because the Bacon family
tried to help him. They were all that Gantos had and he acted like they did not matter. He
bagged them up, threw them in the trash, and screwed his life up even more.
