Name: Ashlynn Nowell Mentor: DeAnn Carr Grade: 3° Date: 3/17/2015 School: Ericson Lesson Topic: Identifying Polygons Content Standard: 3.6.3 Observation Focus: ELL Focus students: See Class Profile 9:05 T- Pulls stick, “Isabell when we are describing a circle, does it have curved paths?” S-yes. T- Pulls stick “Our big question, Is a circle a polygon?” S-No T- "Why not?” S- "It does not have straight sides.” T- "The next shape a squiggly line. s it a plane shape?” S- Yes T- Pulls stick, “ls this shape open?” s-Yes T-"How do you know?” S-Ithas.a gap T- Pulls stick, “Does this have curved paths?” s-Yes T- Pulls stick” Eli, What about line segments?” S-No T-Pulls stick, “isabella is this drawing a polygon?” S-No T- "Why not” S- “because...(wait time)... Because T- "Look at our information.” S- (Inaudible) T-"I'm going to have someone help you.” Pulls stick S-“Itis not a closed shape and does not have straight T'So Isabella, what does it not have? S- Straight lines T "Next shape. Clarissa, can i say this is a plane shape?” s-Yes. T-Calls on student pulling stick,"Isit a closed shape?” s-Yes T-"why?” S- (Inauditble) T- "Do you see any gaps?” S-No T- “Then itis a closed shape.” T- "Think about our video.” S- Because it has curves. ‘T- “Take a minute and finish up. These are the questions we use when we deciding ifa shape is @ polygon.” Walks around and monitors student’s workbooks. “Good work. We are going to take notes. Polygons are always plane shapes.” Fills in always. “Next one. Polygons are always closed shapes.” Fills in always. “fit has any gaps it is not a polygon. Polygons are never open shapes. Look at shape B you know itis not a polygon because it has a gap.” Fills in never. “Plane shapes are sometimes polygons.” Fills in sometimes. “Ok so Polygons are always plane shape. Polygons are always closed shapes. They ‘are never open. Plane shapes are sometimes plane shapes. Look all 4 shapes are plane but only one was ‘polygon, Please turn to the next page.” 9:20 T- "Now we are going to name the polygons. Polygons are named by the number of sides and angles they have. Some traffic signs are polygons. Which shape is a stop sign? Let’s look at the name of the polygons. Raise your hand if you have seen a triangle. They have 3 sides and angles. They can look different. if they have 3 sides and closed itis a triangle.” S- Write in their workbook. Filling in 3 for the sides and 3 for the angles. T- "This is a quadrilateral. tt has 4 sides and ___ angles. How many angles do quadrilaterals have?” Pulls stick, S-4 angles. T- “if we look at the quadrilaterals, they look different. They all have 4 sices and 4 angle: T-“Apentagon has___sides and 5 angles. How many sides?” Pulls stick. S-5 sides, T- “They have 5 sides and 5 angles. They look different but all have S sides and 5 angles.” T "Next | have... hexagon has __ sides and 6 angles. How many sides does a hexagon have?” Pulls stick, s8 T"Are you sure?” 5-6 T- “Octagons. An octagon has 8 sides and angles. How many angles?” Pulls stick. 5-8. T=“Excellent, 8 angles. They all have 8 sides and 8 angle: T—"“Last one, decagon. A decagon has. sides and 10 angles. How many sides?” Pullsstick. $10. THere are a few examples. They all have 10 sides and 10 angles. Our quest is what type of shape isa stop sign. (need to know the sides and angles. How many sides SB T-"How many angles?” $8 S- Wait when I count, it has 9. T“Itdoes? Let’s look.” Circles the angles and counts. “A stop sign has 8 sides and 8 angles. So what is the name of the shape?” Pulls stick. S- Octagon, T- "How did you know?” S-It has 8 sides. T- “Now we are going to move on partner practice.” Gives directions to students. “We will do numbers 1-7. You have lots of notes to look at.” ‘S- 3 hands go up. 1 partners not talking looking at each other's paper and erasing and changing answers. ‘Lgroup deciding if itis a quadrilateral. 4 groups working independently. 935 T- Goes over the answers 1- S-Yes T- Pulls stick. “Teresa, S-closed Twhy?” S- There are no gaps T~"can | call this a pentagon?” S-No T-"Why?” S- Because it does not have 5 sides T- "Does it have curved paths?” s-no T- “No but it does have line segments.” ‘T= “Can | call this a hexagon?” S-No Te "why?" S-It does not have 6 sides T- “What is the name?” S- Quadrilateral T “Why?” S- Ithas 4 sides and angles. T “For 2,3,4,, we are deciding if these are polygons. Yes or no. If its not then tell me why.” Pulls stick. “Number 2.” S- No because it has gaps. T- "What type of shape is that? WE reviewed it before. When it has gaps, what do we call it?” Swait time..... Open shape T- “Is this a polygon?” S-No "Why not?” S- Because itis curved and not connected. ‘T- “What do we call that when it is not connected?” S-it's not connected T-"Yeah, but what is that called?” S-aplane shape. T—"No, a plane shape is any shape with line segments or curved lines. I's called a closed shape.” T Pulls stick. “Richard 5. How many sides does this have?” S-3 sides. ‘Alena, is this a plane shape?” it open or closed?
