CENTRAL PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT No.CD0/S8E(D) /G(2)/77/ Cir. No.11/77 Dated:27.5.77 MEMORANDUM Sub: Masonry spread footings. Provisions regarding masonry spread footings in IS code 1080-1962 (Para 4.3.2) and the National Building Code (Para 7.1.2) are as under: "The angle of the spread of the load from the wall base to the outer edge of the ground bearing shall not exceed the following values. In brick masonry and stone masonry 1/2 horizontal to 1 vertical." However, the practice adopted in CPWD differs. Some follow the rule given above while others follow the traditional practice of 2-1/4" (quarter brick) offset in every course of 3" thicknéss. The matter has been examined and it has been decided that in future uniform practice may be followed in CPWD and an offset of 2-1/4"(quarter brick) may be provided in every course of 3" thickness. In order to reduce the quantity of masonry in footings, offsets (as many as required) should be provided in the lower part of the footing. Enclosed sketch shows what is being done by some of the S.Ws and what should be done to economise cost. The above instructions may be communicated to all concerned for implementation with immediate effect. These should be implemented even in building under construction.
