BECKER-RUDDER
Structure and mode of operation
The BECKER-rudder is a “flap-rudder". The flap is connected
with the main rudder by a hinge joint. When putting the helm
this flap is turning by means of a link in such a way that
the angle of the flap is double the angle of the main rudder.
As a result of an appropriate balance no greater rudder
torques arise than with a normal rudder. Thefefore the
customary steering gears can be installed.

Measurements have shown that the transverse force of the
BECKER-rudder is by abt, 50 % greater than that of a normal
xudder. When the BECKER-rudder is put hard over the water
is favourably deflected by its curved area. Thus the thrust
ahead is mostly transformed into transverse force.

When the ship is going straight ahead a considerable course
steadiness is obtained by the BECKER-rudder . Even at small
rudder angles big transverse forces are quickly reached. The BECKER-rudder is qualified for all vessels for which
the best manoeuvring ability is required. First this type
of rudder has entered the field of inland navigation, but
now BECKER-rudders are more and more used for seagoing
vessels too, In the range of the fishery and the offshore
business as well as for tugs, ferries and sea-going ships
with frequent estuary trading the manoeuvrability is
considerably improved by the BECKER-rudder-
When designing the BECKER-rudder especially a solid
construction free of maintenance has been regarded. The
parts moving or turning against each other are of stainless
steel or synthetic. Lubrication by sea-water.
If flap, hinge or link should be damaged either the link
can be put out of service or the flap may be removed.
Thereby the ship does not become unmanageable. The capacity
of the installation only is diminished. Each delivery of the BECKER-rudder consists of rudder blade,
flap, hinge, link, rudder stock, bearing bushes and trunk.
As the unit is delivered complete the shipyard has only to
adjust and to weld on it. When agreed the extent of the
delivery is enlarged by the rudder carrier and a suitable
steering gear. All installations can be supplied with the
certificate of acceptance from a Society of Classification.

Some types of BECKER-rudder units with certain sizes have
been fixed. By using standard figures of length the height
of the rudder only has to be adjusted to any ship. Further-
more, .since the component parts proceed from series building,
these are always on hand as spare parts in the store of the
firm Willi Becker. Expert mounters are at anyone's disposal
for mounting and starting of the units.
