​ he Sierra Nevada National Park of Santa Marta is one of the protected areas of Colombia's

natural parks system and the second oldest, created in 1964

It is located in the interior of the departments of La Guajira, Magdalena and Cesar, within of
the mountain system of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.

It is considered a unique place in the world due to its isolation from the Andes mountain
range and its highest peak (5775 meters above sea level), only 42 km from the sea.

In it are all the thermal floors that are in the Colombian territory, as well as different biomes
that make up the forest, the mountain forest and the Andean páramos.

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is approximately distributed between the departments of
Magdalena, Cesar and La Guajira, in the Colombian Caribbean, in jurisdictions of the
municipalities of Ciénaga, San Juan del Cesar, Fundación, Aracataca, Dibulla, Mingueo,
Santa Marta, Riohacha and Valledupar

Likewise, the climate of the entire region is determined by the trade winds and by the
elevation with respect to sea level. That is why the temperature ranges from 27 ° in the lower
part of the park to 6 ° in the highest peaks of the Sierra.

The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta has a wide variety of wild animals, consisting of species
of birds, mammals, fish and insects. Some 628 species of birds, 120 of mammals and 142 of
amphibians and reptiles have been detected.
