Tailoring the Uncertainty and Optimization Process with Numbered

Include Files

Although the uncertainty and optimization process is very useful and allows the engineer to optimize
and automate repetitive work, it has some limitations on how the run can be tweaked at each timestep,
especially if there is not a direct Petrel process for changing variables of interest.

One way this can be overcome is to package ECLIPSE keywords into numbered include files, and then
use the U&O process to point to them in the desired order. This can be done by following the steps
below.

1. Package the ECLIPSE keywords into include files and save it in the .sim folder. Make sure you
save the file with just a number. (In this case I am using XMF/YMF/SOIL/SGAS to enumerate a
compositional case at different timesteps)

2. In the U&O Process, go into the keyword editor of your base case. Sort by include files. Add the
INCLUDE keyword. Under the keyword write the generic path with a variable, for example:

INCLUDE
..\$Tstep /

3. Use the variables tab with the “List” type of control. Just type the number (name) of the file you
want called at every particular simulation. You can combine this control with any other number
of variable assignments.

You are done! The U&O process will call the include files in the order you specified upon running. This
process allows the user full control of whole groups of keywords to be called in the U&O process and
can aid in complicated experimental designs or keywords that are not supported directly by Petrel.
