CMB Pressure-Temperature Insights

The document discusses materials and conditions at the core-mantle boundary (CMB) of Earth. It notes temperatures of 3000-5000 K and pressures of 136 GPa at the CMB, where silicate solids and metallic liquids are found. Studies have shown strong mantle flow near the CMB. High pressure techniques discussed for studying these extreme conditions include laser heated diamond anvil cells, large volume presses, and resistance heated diamond anvil cells using diamond anvils to generate pressures over 100 GPa on sample sizes as small as 10-2 mm2. Shock waves and first principles calculations are also summarized as methods for determining properties under ultra-high pressures.
