INSTRUCTIONS | ‘Answer ALL questions; full credits will be given to clear and logical presentation of solution; whenever necessary, draw simple diagrams, state the principle or theory being applied, and/or assumptions made. Marks allocated to each question are indicated in brackets. QI. Gate AB in Figure 1 (A and B denote the top end and bottom end of the gate respectively) is 1.2 m long and 0.8 m into the paper. Neglecting atmospheric pressure, compute the force R on the gate and its centre-of-pressure position X from A along the incline. (9 marks) Use a value of g=9.81 m/s’ for all acceleration due to gravity on earth. Q2. Suppose that the tank in Figure | is filled with liquid GL, not oil. Gate AB is 0.8 m wide into the paper. Suppose that liquid GL causes a force R on gate AB and that the moment of this force about point B is 26,500 Nm. What is the specific gravity of liquid GL? (4 marks) Q3. The tank in Figure 2 has a 4-cm-diameter plug at the bottom on the right. All fluids are at 20°C. The plug will pop out if the hydrostatic force on it is 25 N. For this condition, what will be the reading / on the mercury manometer on the left side? (7 marks) 23/03/2016 Dr A. Aacina Diaby
