Mentorship Journals

Week 9/10/18: Journal entry #1. I was not able to meet up with my mentor because the
students follwing people that work at UTMB have not been cleared yet to shadow there
mentor. I plan to make up these hours by visiting with my mentor 3 days a week for a hour and
a half.
Week 9/17/18: I chose to do my semester topic of a menisectomy. I selected this topic because
I have had one before and this relates to me on a personal experience. My mentor plays a role
in this topic because he is a orthopedic surgeon and can give me insite on what really happens.
also my mentor experience is working at UTMB.
Week 9/24/18: Key points that I think would be value to my mid-term
presentaion(Meniscectomy) are what are the steps to removing a meniscus the therapy of after
surgery and the pre-op. 3 things that I will need to research is the types of tools being used for
surgery, second I need to be able to research what types of professions are in the operating
room and finally I will need to be able to make a replica meniscus. One interesting thing I was
able to observe was seeing a little girl with a extra bone in her foot that was causing
inflammation and needed to be removed asap because if she didn’t it could cause nerve
damage.
Week 10/1/18: In this nine weeks I learned the trials and the hardship of what intels to
becoming a orthopedic surgeon. What I hope to learn in the next nine weeks is all the types of
procedures that orthopedic surgeons do. Also another aspect I want to learn is all the differant
type of jobs that are in the OR.
Week 10/15/18: My strengths for my nine weeks evaluation was high potential and also good
manners. Areas that my mentor told me I needed to work on was knowledge. In areas I did not
get a 5 on I plan to go above and beyond and achieve to get a 5.
Week 10/22/18: i was not able to attend mentorship because of JCO was at the UTMB site all
week. My favoriet thing about my mentorship is the faculity because they are all super nice.
