(2 marks) b) List three (3) intensive properties. (3 marks) ©) Aclosed vessel contains 138.9 g of water initially at 28.3°C. If 384 ki of energy is supplied, to what temperature will the content of the vessel rise? Assume the pressure within the vessel is constant at 1 atm, and that none of the added energy is used to heat the vessel. (6 marks) QUESTION 2 (P01, CO1, C2, C3, C3) a) An amount of liquid ethanol at 30°C and 10 bar is vaporized and heated to 250°C at constant pressure. Identify two (2) possible hypothetical paths for the process. State the differences and information needed for each proposed hypothetical path. (9 marks) b) Calculate the specific enthalpy (A H) of the following process. Cyclohexane (v, 50°C, 1 atm) ———» Cyclohexane (v, 150°C, 30 atm) (7 marks) ©) Seventy five percent (75%) quality steam is fed to an insulated pipe at a pressure of 1.5 bar. At a junction the pipe branches into two separate pipe runs, namely pipe A and pipe B, as shown in Figure 1. Determine the proportion ratio of the total amount of H20 in the feed that flow in pipe A. Assume heat losses from the system is negligible. In the first mixing process, equal mass flow rates of concentrated sulphuric acid (95% “iy H2SO4) and dilute sulphuric acid (10% “/, H2SO,) are fed to a mixer at a temperature of 27°C. After mixing, the stream enters a cooler. The stream exit the cooler then passing to the second stage of mixing where further dilution takes place by the addition of pure water at 27°C to produce the 40% “Iw H2SO, solution at 45°C. a) Draw and label the flow chart of the process. (4 marks) b) Enthalpy-concentration charts for H;SO, — H,0 in Appendix 1 can be used to simplify the processes mentioned above. Locate and mark the points for each stream processes and properties on the attached chart. Describe the properties of each points. (Attach Appendix 4 with your answer booklet). (10 marks) QUESTION 4 (P01, CO2, C3, C5) a) Synthesis of methanol and water from carbon dioxide and hydrogen is carried out in a continuous gas-phase reactor as shown in Figure 2. The feed contains CO, and H, in stoichiometric proportion and enters the reactor at 50°C and 1.00 atm at a rate of 20 m*h. The product stream emerges from the reactor at 200°C. The rate of heat transfer from the reactor is 3.5 kW. Assume the gas is ideal. Heat of reaction of the process is taken as - 49.53 KJimol CO2 He CH;OH H,0 Figure 2 Continuous gas-phase reactor ’) Determine the molar flow rate of CO, and He in the feed (mol/h).
