Well Abandonment

Well Abandonment Meaning

The legal term of decommissioning, found in Petroleum Arrangement Contract.

The act of removing Petroleum Facilities that are disused or no longer required
for Petroleum Operations and to restore the affected Contract Area to a safe and
environmentally stable condition pursuant to the respective Petroleum
Arrangement Contract.
PPGUA 4.0

To prepare a wellbore to be shut in and permanently isolated. There are typically

regulatory requirements associated with the P&A process to ensure that strata,
particularly freshwater aquifers, are adequately isolated. In most cases, a series
of cement plugs is set in the wellbore, with an inflow or integrity test made at
each stage to confirm hydraulic isolation.

Well Abandonment Objectives

Generally, a proper well abandonment accomplishes the following:

1) Isolation of hydrocarbon.
2) Adequate hydraulic isolation between porous zone/in the well.
3) Eliminates vertical migration of fluids along borehole.
4) Eliminates the physical hazard of the well (the hole in the ground)
5) Eliminates a pathway for migration of contamination,
6) Long term integrity of the wellbore is maintained.

Requirement

Volume 9, Section 2, 2.3 Requirements

HSE expectations as stated in this section shall be implemented by Contractor in
order to ensure all HSE hazards related to Decommissioning activities are
adequately assessed and HSE risks that have been identified are managed to
ALARP level. The appropriate actions shall be taken to ensure the risks will not
cause any adverse impact to human life, environment, asset and reputation.

Volume 9, Section 3, 3.3, 3.3.1.2 (HSE & Asset integrity)

In the event that the asset has suffered damages from any major accident
hazards (e.g. explosion, fire, vessel collision) or an asset integrity status falls
below the safe limit which poses serious risk to human life, environment, asset
and reputation and is beyond repair, Contractor may consider the upstream
installations to be decommissioned.

Why Pre-P&A data acquisition are important?

1. To understand well integrity snapshot and field annulus pressure behavior.

2. To map out the source of pressure build up in annulus for individual well and
platform.
3. To understand the existence of shallow gas behavior prior P&A designing.
4. To evaluate latest status of tubing ID condition.
5. To evaluate cement sealing performance prior and post P&A.
6. To evaluate latest thickness condition of multiple casing.
7. To evaluate latest strength of cement bond behind casing.

It was understood
that all these data
acquisition objectives
Well Abandonment Objectives are being
expected/required.
