EXERCISE 1
1. I have been studying since last January.
2. By the time Hasan returned to his country, he had been away from home for more than
three years.
3. After I graduate, I am going to return to my hometown.

5. I want to get married, but I haven’t met the right person yet.
6. I have seen that movie three times, and now I want to see it again.
7. I don’t like my job. My brother wants me to quit. I think he is right.
8. While I’m studying tonight, I’m going to listen to classical music.
9. We washed the dishes and cleaned up the kitchen after our dinner guests left.
10. My neighbors are Mr. and Mrs. Sanchez. I have known them ever since I was a child.

1. John is in my English class. He is studyingEnglish this semester.He is also takingsome
other classes. His classes beginat 09:00 everyday.
2. Yesterday John ate breakfast at 08:00. He had already eaten breakfast when he left for
class at 8:45.
3. John always eats breakfast before he goes to class. Tomorrow before hegoes to class, he
will eat breakfast.
4. John is in class every morning from 9:00 to 12:00. Two days ago, I called him at 11:30,
but I could not reach him because he was attending class at that time.
5. Don't try to call John at 11:30 tomorrow morning because he will be attending class at
that time.
6. Yesterday John took a nap from 1:00 to 2:00. I arrived at 1:45. When I got there, John
was sleeping. He had been sleeping for 45 minutes by the time I got there.
7. Right now John is taking a nap. He fell asleep an hour ago. Hehas been sleeping for an
hour.
8. Tomorrow, after he eats dinner, John will go to a movie. In other words, he will
haveeaten dinner by the time he goes to the movie.
9. Three days ago, John started to read The Old Man and the Sea, a novel by Ernest
Hemingway. He hasn’t finished reading it yet. He has been reading it because his English
teacher assigned it.
10. Since the beginning of the semester, John has finished three novels. Right now heis
readingThe Old Man and the Sea.He has been reading that novel since the pasy three
days. He intends to finish it next week. In his lifetime, he has read many novels, but this
is the first Hemingway novel he has ever read.
