(HEADLINE) TAU’s Belen wins 2nd prize

(LEAD)

Featuring indigenous and recycled materials in a creative Belen design, the TAU’s official entry to the
annual Belenismo sa Tarlac bagged the second prize in the Monumental category during the awarding
ceremony held last December 8 at the College of Holy Spirit Gym in Tarlac City.

The Belen design, created by the university’s Supreme Student Council (SSC), showcased Bamboo crafts
and colorful lightings in its portrayal of the birth of Jesus. Paper plates and hand-made fans were also
recycled as a decoration for the Belen.

“In terms of the design, the main goal was actually to keep everything subtle yet sophisticated. We
wanted to not overdo it because we don’t want to overshadow the essence and sacredness of the Birth
of Jesus with too much design, but we also wanted to showcase indigenous crafts and recyclables in a
very creative manner.” SSC Councilor Mico Mendoza said about the design of TAU’s Belen entry.

The SSC, led by its president Emerson Jasmin, received the trophy and 60,000 cash prize from Tarlac
Heritage Foundation during the awarding ceremony.

The McDonald’s motorway won the first prize in the monumental category. The Municipality of Capas
and the St. Francis of Assisi Parish bagged the first prizes in the Grand and Grand Non-Municipal
categories respectively. Additionally, the Philippine Army and PNP PR03’s Belen titled Marawi sa
Panahon ng Kapayapan was also given a Hall of Fame award.

Celebrities and special guests were also present during the awarding. Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola, Jona,
Julie Anne San Jose, Aaron Villaflor, Mikee Quintos, Migo Adecer, Luane Dy and One Up performed, and
former AFP chief of staff and now DILG Usec. Eduardo Año gave a speech.
