1. LatRODUCTION A current pronounced trend is toward marine equipment rationalization and automation, and marine ac, generators are required to have higher voltage accuracies than before, In order to meet such requirement, we have produced the Self-Excited A.C. Generator Model CBB, which is equipped with an automatic voltage regulator incorporating semiconductors and has more excellent characteristics than the earlier self-excited a.c. generators of models CR and CRA, upon the basis of our companys rich experience in practical production of marine electric machinery. This model has already been favorably commented upon by users... 2. OUTLINE The formation of the basic circuit of the CRB self=excited a.c. generator ie as shown in Fig. 1. 4 a self-excited compound generator, it is basically composed of a linear reactor. a current transformer, a silicon rectifier, an automatic voltage regulator (AVR) for fine voltage regulation, a saturable reactor, a resistor, a current transformer for cross—current compensation, and so forth, [ge PO ie cot 7 [— Ly R TT AVR ae Luk SRT P: Pield winding CT: Current transformer RT: Reactor SRT: Saturable reactor © PT: Power transformer Si; Silicon rectifier 5: Silicon carbide varistor RB: Resistor AVR: automatic voltage regulator VR: Voltage regulator CCT: Current transformer for cross—current compensation Del: Differential current transformer Quick restionse is a major matter of concern with the control devices for a.e. generstors just as with all other various control apparatus. However, marine a.c, generators are required vo vpuriie uuler su sevae avade that exceedingly quick tesponse is absolutely necessary. ‘The excitation system of tne self-excited a.c. generator is much quicker in response than other types of excitation systems, exhibiting almost the same characteristics as the thyrister-incorrorated direct excitation system, The tlaraclerietie featuce uf the self-cauited a,c, geucrator are ac cummoriaed below: ‘There is no rotary exciter so that quick response and facile maintenance are ensured, Even when the system is disturbed, the voltage is maintained so that stable operation ic cncurcd, (Hepecially in save of shorting, = holdii yor cs or ne short-circuit current will flow, and selective disconnection of the faulty circuit is practicable. 3. An almost steble voltage can be produced even’ without the AVR. 4, Since there is no rotary exciter, the generator construction is simple land Sho arca for generator ingtallation is leceensd, and further, there are a very small number of parte required to slide in electric contact with othe? perts. Voltage self-establishment can be performed positively without the necessity of any special apparatus. tm anparant from tha shave summary, the selfoavcited a.c. zenerator satisfies all necessary conditions for’marine use. Moreover, our company's self-excited a.c. generator of model ORB is equipped with a semiconductor AVR, and therefore the voltage characteristics are such that the voltage accuracy is very high, with a substantially constant voltage maintained against a frequency variation within +3 Hz. Thus, the CRB self-excited a.c. generator is ideal for the intended purpose, 3. OPERATION 3-1 Basic Principle of the CRB Self-éxcited A.C, Generator In the exeiting aystem of the self-excited a.c. generator, the current flowing through the linear reactor (RT) serves as an exciting current for maintaining the terminal voltage under no load, while the secondary current of the current transformer (CT) compensates for the voltage drop caused within the generator when it is loaded, thus keeping the terminal voltage almost constant regardless of the load. However, the magnetic saturation of the generator cores, the change of the field winding resistance due to temperature change and other factors make it difficult to maintain a perfectly constant voltage. or this reason, the CRB self-excited a.c. generator is provided with the AVR including semiconductors for’ d.c, excitation of the current transformer and the saturable reactor, the saturation degree of which is thus varied to control the exciting current so as to stabilize the terminal voltage to_a fixed value. ‘The linear reactor and the current transformer are set for over-compensation with regard to the exciting current (curve "a", "b”) required to maintain the desired voltage, and the hatched section refers to the shunt current component to the saturable reactor by d.c. excitation, For example, when the generator terminal voltage has risen, the d.c. eutput of the AVR will increase to raise the saturation degree of the saturable
