Such ma terials may be received in trucks, trailers, ships boats, barges, and various types of cars such os mine cars, hopper bottoms, gondolas, and boxcors. Requirements may vary from one oF two cars per week to sixty oF more cars per hour. Operation of unloading equipment may very from seasonal of intermittent use at some mines, groin elevators, and small plants, 10 the severe ‘doy in, day out” service ot stool mills and large steam generating stations. Docks, piers, terminals ‘ond other bulk transfer stotions require high degree of dependability and usually high capacities for maximum economy. Selection of the most affective end economical vunloeding equipment depends upon the type of cartier to be unloaded, the characteristics and con- dition of the material, the unloading rate, onnval fonnage, the meant of moving cars or barges to ‘and from unloader, and, in the case of large ships, the cost of demurrage. Unloading of free flowing materials seldom re: quires considerations other than those of copacity fend appropriate type of equipment. Sluggish or Micky materials often require « car shaker for quick, Cleon discharge of hopper cars, or @ rotary dumper for higher capacities. Frozen coal or ore may require thawing to free it from car sides, ofter which the discharge of moderate capecities of frozen lumps may vsvally be accelerated by a car shaker. Higher capacities of frozen material con best be unlocded with © rotary car dumper. The average unloading rate, in cars per hour, in cludes both the unloading cycle and the time required, fo move cars to and from the unloading operation. The most effective use of unloading equipment often requires haulage machines or car spotters to reduce the delays of such movements, Also, feeding and conveying equipment is more economical when the hopper, into which the cor i unloaded, is large ‘enough to contain sufficient material to continuously feed the system while cars are shifted to ond from the unloading operation, Various types of bucket elevator unlooders ore covailable for unloading ships of grain, borges of cool and other free flowing materials ot capacities Up to 2000 or more tons per hour. Various standard types of unloading equipment core described on the following pages. Link Belt hos built many other types and sizes for unusual con- ditions ond Link-Belt engineers are available for ‘ossisting in the selection of such equipment. 9g + LINK-BELT Haulage machines (poge 41) ore of two types; copstan and drum. They ‘are used for moving railroad cars and mine cars or performing other industrial pulling jobs. Capston car spotters are compact, sturdy machines which pull by means of a rope snubbed around the vertical capstan. Drum type pullers cre generally used for heavier service cond larger installations. Both con be orranged with @ variety of cable sys tems for intermittent or continuous op eration to suit the track layout ond the handling of cars at the site. Car shakers (page 50) are on ef- fective means of emptying hopper bottom railroad cars when the material foils to run out of the open hopper doors by gravity alone. The machine is set on the car after it has been spotted lover the track hopper. A motor drives two eccentrically weighted flywheels. They are of two forms, one for railroad cars and one for mine cars. The railroad car dumpers are so designed that when rotation is started, the transfer teble supporting the rails moves laterally until the side of the car rests ogoins! a timbered side frame of the cradle. Simultaneously with this movement, overhead clamps descend to the top of the car to hold it securely. The cradle rotates until eutomatically stopped at the inverted position, Operation is then reversed. Rotary car dumpers have been built for dumping more thon 60 cars per hour. Mine cor dumpers moy be furnished to dump single cars, coupled or un- coupled, of several cars in @ train, Cars are automatically held in ploce. Dumpers may be designed to rotate through an angle sufficient for dumping cond then return, oF through a complete revolution. The frame includes @ shield to direct and ease the fall of moterial. Completely controlled by one mon, these dumpers are fast, smooth running, durable and foolproof. Side-titing type dumpers are alto ovailable for dumping refuse. This dumper is semi-cutomatic in operation and lifts the ear vertically, then tilts it to one side to unload the contents. Power unloading scoops (page 60) are used for unloading grain and other ‘arcnvlar materials from boxcars and trucks into hoppers, ond for other similar operations. They encble one man to perform tasks which would require the efforts of several men by manual methods. The operator draws the scoop bock over the material « suitable distance, and then ellows slack in the rope. This starts the winding mechanism, which pulls the scoop forward to push the material to the discharge point while the operator holds the scoop upright by its handles. Power for ‘operating the unit is supplied by an electric motor driving through a mult ple V-belt drive, Exireme vibration and impact shock is prevented from reach: ing the motor by means of @ pivoted, rubber-mounted motor platform. To unload, the cars are moved into place over conventional track hoppers in the vsval manner by car hauls, car spotters, switch engines or other means. After the car gates have been opened, the car shaker is lowered into place on the center portion of the car fond the motor started. Operation of the machine causes the vibrator end of the frame to rise and fall and impart heavy blows to the car equal in number to the revolutions of the vibra- tor shaft. The motor end pivots on the car top and acts 1: a guide fo hold the shoker in place. The action of the car shaker olso causes lengthwise motion of the car, resulting in a conveying action on the hopper bottom. TWIN CABLE HOIST bulk handling ‘car shake Capacity The rate of car unloading will vory with the nature of the meterial in the car, the design of the car, car switch- ing and storing facilities end the rate at which materials, ‘can be conveyed from the track hopper. Normally, @ one to three minute operation of the shaker will completely, ‘empty the car. Sticky or frozen meterials may require ‘additional time. Extremely frozen cars should be partially thawed. Hoists Where conditions permit, single-hook five-ton capecity stationary or power-propelled, motor operated hoists, may be used for lowering the shaker into position. For ground level control, twin-hook hoists are preferred, as this type machine will lower the shaker onto the car without guidance. It is recommended that hoists be equipped with lower limit or slack line switches to prevent operation of the shcker until i is properly placed fon the car. Yard cranes and similer hoisting equipment can be used to handle cor shakers. LINK-BELT + 51 bulk handling car du car dumpers Link-Belt car dumpers rapidly and economically unload all types of open-top cars carrying bulk motericls. They are used ot power houses, mines, by-product plants, steel mills, railto-water transfer docks, cement mills, smelters, concentrators, luminum plants and sugar refineries, for unlocding such materials os coal, coke, rock, ore, sugar beets ond sugar cone. Four types of car dumpers are aveilable, each designed to unload a car by rotating, tilting, or over-turning and dumping the contents into @ receiving hopper, in one operation. These four types ore: Rotary roilroad car dumpers. Rotary mine car dumpers for single cars or multiple cars coupled in a train, Side tiling ond transfer refuse cor dumpers. Side discharge railroad car dumpers. All types embody Link-Belt’s valuable background of experience in the application of unloading equipment and the handling of bulk materiale 52+ LINK-BELT Rotary railroad car dumpers bulk handling car dumpers The Link-Belt rotary reilroad car dumper is designed to rapidly unload open top railroad cars, primarily coal cars. This is accomplished by overturning the car, securely held in a rotating cradle, and completely dumping its contents in one operation. The full cycle of turning the car practically upside down and returning it to © normal position requires 90 seconds for the standard dumper, however drives can be furnished for cycles as low es 40 seconds, when required. Switching time, dependent on local facilities for handling the cars onto and away from the dumper, must be added to the turning cycle, to determine the total number of cors that can be handled. Dumping operation After the car has been placed on the dumper track, the turning cycle is started by the operator, lecated in @ cab adjacent to the dumper, where he hos o clear view of all operations. As rotation begins, the transfer table moves sidewise within the cradle, until the cor side rests against the timbered side frame of the cradle. Simulteneously the overhead self-adjusting clamps descend upon the top of the car, and hold it securely to the track rails during the turning cycle, Rotation continues until the car is overturned and stopped automatically by @ limit switch. To return the empty cor, the operator reverses the cycle, As the car nears its normal upright position, the clamps are automatically released and lifted. The transfer table then moves sidewise until the rails ore again in line with those outside the dumper, and the empty car is ready to be removed. Four-clamp dumpers are available for 90 to 120-ton cars when contents are frozen, and they are equipped with four pairs of equalizing rollers, two pairs under each end ring. The Link-Belt dumper cradle, which receives the car to be dumped, consists of two distinclly separate ports; one, an outer structure made up of two structural steel roller rings, rigidly connected and braced; and the other, @ transfer table ‘or platen, supported within the outer structure, on transverse rollers, and provided with track roils upon which the car rests. The two-clamp dumper handles cars 29 feet to 58 feet long over couplers; 6 feet, 4 inches to 12 feet, 7 inches high; 9 to 11 feet wide; and with copacities vp to 90 tons. ‘One 40-horsepower motor furnishes the power required for complete operation of the two-clamp dumper operating on @ 90-second turning cycle, Where foster cycles are required, the dumper speed can be increased by using @ larger motor. Automatic and safety features Every operation, except placing end removing cars, and operating the controls, is automatic and foolproof. The dumper can be stopped by the operator, at any time and in any position, where it is securely held in place by an automatic electric brake. There are no electrical connections or complicated interlocks on the dumper cradle. The dumper track rails are always held in correct alignment with the out- side rails, ofter completion of the cycle, allowing cars to be moved safely on or off the dumper, 54+ LINK-BELT Rotary mine car dumpers ingle ears, tis ratory mine cor dumper plays an important pon in phosphate mang. Operating in @ manner similar to the Link-Belt rotary railroad car dumper, they rotate and overturn the cars to discharge the contents. They are power driven ond can be designed to handle single cars uncoupled, or single or multiple cars coupled in a train, depending on capacity requirements. Normally these dumpers are built for full 360 degree rotation, but designs are available for rotating the cars to an angle sufficient for dumping and then returning 10 ‘an upright position. A rotatable structural steel frame equipped with tracks ‘ond means for holding the cars on the tracks, receives the cars either singly or in groups. This frame incorpo: rates a dumping shield to ease the drop of moteriel and is supported by high carbon steel end rings cartied on rollers. ‘Mine car dumpers are built with two types of drives, Positive and traction. Each type is capable of completing several dumping eycles per minute.
