FOREWORD

This lndian Standard ( Fourth Revision ) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards, after the
draft finalized by the Sanitary Appliances and Water Fittings Sectional Committee had been approved
by the Civil Engineering Division Council.
This standard was first published in 1963 and the first, second and third revisions were issued in 1967,
1973 and 1985 respectively.
In this revision changes found necessary in the light of comments made by users and improvements
made by the vitreous sanitaryware industry have been incorporated Further the dimensions which are
critical for plumbing ( connecting dimensions ) have been separated from the functional dimensions.
Washdown pattern water closet with *P’/‘S’ traps including concealed S traps and horizontal outlet
have been included.
In the formulation of this revision, connecting dimensions to the extent possible have been harmonized
with EN 33 : 1980 ‘Pedestal WC: pan with close coupled cistern: Connecting dimensions. Assistance has
also been derived from BS 5503 ( Part 3 ) : 1990 sSpecification for vitreous china washdown WC pans
with horizontal outlet, Part 3 WC pans with horizontal outlet for use with 7.5 L maximum flush capa-
city cisterns’, issued by the British Standards Institute.
The composition of the technical committee responsible for the formulation of this standard is given in
Annex A.
For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final
value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accor-
dance with IS 2 : 1960 ‘Rules for rounding off numerical values ( revised)‘. The number of significant
places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this
standard.
