WELCOME BACK!
It’s the start of a new curling
season and I hope everyone is
looking forward to it, Curling
has been part of the Orillia
community since 1873 and is still
going strong.
Our club has a reputation for
being friendly and helpful due to
our members, coaches and
convenors.
Strong membership keeps the
club going. We have a variety of
leagues offering curling for every
skill level.
Doubles curling is a new league
this year as a result of interest
expressed by _ enthusiastic
Olympic Game watehers.
The Board of Directors is
working hard to keep the club
operating and vibrant. The Orillia
Curling Club had deficits for
three years.
Over the course of the summer, I met with convenors, coaches and
directors. A membership committee was struck and they have
been very active. The focus is on getting new members and
‘member retention. Final numbers are not out for this season, but
early indications show that it will be a struggle to get to 350 active
members, which is what we had for last 2 years.
‘We have three directors retiring: Mary Hutton, Registrar; Cheryl
Heitzner, Secretary; and Kathy Hildebrandt, Treasurer. Our thanks
‘go out to them for all their hard work.
Our AGM is November 3, at 2:00 pm at the club. We have three
club members to fill these positions, but there are two positions.
still vacant. If you are ready to step forward, please call me!
Keep up to date by viewing the club calendar on our website,
Choose “All Categories” at the bottom of the screen. Good curling
everyone!

Japanese students try out curling!
On Tuesday, October 17°, the OCC hosted 40
students from Yokohama Soei Japan. The
students, aged from 11 to 18, participate in the
Muskoka Language International Program and
participate in day-to-day classroom life in the
Gravenhurst area. MLI provide opportunities for
the students to immerse themselves in the
Canadian way of life. That's where curling comes
into play. The Orillia Curling Club has exposed
students to curling for the past few years. This
year Alan Smale, Dave Campbell, Dave Boyle,
Steve and Jane Barrett, Donna Arnold, Carol
Wilson-Moffatt, Rick Swinton, Joe Denomy, Joe
Watt and Charlene Ley provided a fun curling
experience for all of the students.
Curling broom donations
Our curling broom collection at the club is very tired-
looking! If you have recently acquired a new curling \
broom and could donate your old one, (the one with
the oval head), it would be put to good use for teaching J \
new curlers,
We could also use curling shoes that are in good \
condition.
Please leave items at the Parks and Ree office at the \
club. Thanks!OCC NEWSLETTER

Employee Curling Socials
At the Orillia Curling Club
This is a new initiative being offered by OCC to
local businesses.
Opportunities to use the curling facilities will be
given during the week when the ice is not being
used, The following article will be published in
the December Overtime magazine
Are you looking for a fun, active and social
activity for work colleagues?! Then why not
register for a curling afternoon or evening at the
Orillia Curling Club located at Bamfield Point
Recreation Centre, 500 Atherley Road.
‘The Orillia Curling Club can schedule a two-
hour session, allowing work colleagues to learn
the basics of curling and have a mini curling
game for the nominal fee of $15 per curler.
The minimum number of employees required is
8 and the maximum is 48. The Orillia Curling
Club will provide two instructors for every
group of 8 curlers.
There are various dates and times available
from Tuesdays to Fridays, ranging from 1:00pm
through to late evening
Employees need the following:
+ Warm comfortable clothing ~that
allows for a good range of motion,
‘Wear pants that allow you to squat and
stretch, Long sleeves, warm tops,
sweaters, soft shell jackets, ete., are good
choices. Avoid wearing garments that
shed, such as fleece, fur, etc., since even
a small particle on the ice can change the
direction of a rock.
+ Gloves ~ to keep hands warm and to
allow for a good grip on the broom when
sweeping
+ Clean running shoes — please carry these
in so they remain clean during the on-ice
session,
The Club will provide the rest of the equipment!
Worried that some of the employees won't be
able to crouch down due to sore backs or knees?
We have curling sticks, which make curling
similar to shuffleboard on ice!
Email orilliacurlingclub@gmail.com if
interested, with a subject line of “Employee
Curling”. Our coordinator will get back to you
to schedule a session.
