Mix & Flow of Matter Quiz 1

Students will…
- Investigate the solubility of different materials, and describe their concentration
- Investigate and compare fluids, based on their viscosity and flow rate
- Observe the mass and volume of a liquid, and calculate its density

Complete all questions and check the back page. Remember to show your work!

1. a) Students are testing the flow rate of various liquids using ramps. They timed each liquid for
30 seconds and found: Fluid A traveled 32cm, Fluid B traveled 15cm, and Fluid C traveled 45
cm. Calculate the flow rate of each liquid.

b) Which fluid had the highest viscosity? Explain.

c) Which fluid had the lowest viscosity? Explain.

2. Janine is trying to find the density of her new gigantic Rubik’s Cube. She measured one side
of her cube to be 100 cm and found that it weighs 500g. What is the density of her new Rubik’s
Cube?

3. Donald wants to make the greatest iced tea in the world. He adds 250g of iced tea mix to
500mL of water. What will the concentration of his iced tea be?

4. A student is creating a saturated solution of sugar water. He is able to dissolve 20g of sugar in
50mL of water. What is the concentration in g/100mL?

5. You decide to get new motor oil in your vehicle for the cold winter we are about to have in
Kitscoty. You buy 420mL of motor oil with a mass of 430g.

a) What is the density of the oil you have bought?

b) Do you want your motor oil to be a highly viscous or a non-viscous motor oil? Explain.

BONUS: Your friend, Steve (who is not taking Miss L’s science class), comes running up to you
with a science emergency! He says he cannot remember how to use the Particle Model of Matter.
Help Steve remember the Particle Model of Matter by explaining the acronym SPAM that you
learned in class. Remember to tell him examples so he has a real-life situation to refer to!
