MORE POWER TO THE PIXEL Building your pixel empire Have you ever heard the phrase “Rome wasn't built in day"? Well. a pixel at scene was surely not builtin that amount of time either. As | mentioned earlier people who create professional-quality pixel art have some time on their hands (not to mention an incredible arrount of patience). 'm not insinuating that they sit around all day creating pikel art, but the process can be slow and tedious. Jared Smith, owner of wen.pixeldeviant .con, created this scene. He has created some incredible pivel artwork, and | urge you to stop by his website for inspiration, In this section, ll show you the basic techniques for creating pixel buildings and roads. From there, youll have a strong foundation to continue learning this art form and take it to the next level ifyou so desire. 1. Create a new 540 X 480 Photoshop canves. Add 2 GRID layer on top of the Background layer, and fill it with the grid pattem you made earlier. Reduce the opacity of the GRID layer to around 15%. 2. Using the techniques described earlier, draw a rectangular pixel outline on a layer named BUILDING OUTLINE MORE POWER TO THE PIXEL 3, Similar to the cube exercise, duplicate the outline layer and move it up. Use the Fencil tool to add lines to connect the two rectangles. Make sure all cutine layers are merged when youre done. Als, try to keep your lines along the grid to make things easier 2s your illustration becomes more complex. 4, Next, you need to color the object. To demonstrate that the rules of pixel art dis cussed earlier aren't set in stone, you're going to move the light source down a little so the lefteront side of the building receives the most light, and thus is the brightest color. 5. Create anew layer named BUILDING FILL above BUILDING OUTLINE. Color each side of the building. Use R:80 G:210 B55 for the leftfront side, R36 G:1S7 8197 for the top, and R:19 G:114 B:145 for the right sie.
