Various 21st Century Literary Genres

As society and technology change, so does literacy.”

The evanescence of the old literary works and the emergence of different new compositions and texts takes the
spotlight of today’s world literature.

Who is the 21st century reader?


 They grew up using technology as a tool.
 They are capable of navigating and interpreting digital formats and media messages.
 They possess literacy skills which includes technological abilities such as keyboarding, internet navigation,
downloading, etc.

21st Century Literary Genres


1. illustrated novel---story through text and illustrated images. The reader must comprehend the images in order to
comprehend the story completely.
2. digi-fiction—Triple media literature. It combines 3 media:book, movie/video, and internet websites.It is a fiction that
is written for and read from a computer and can be web-app based(for tablets and smartphones). It is also a book that
includes passcodes so that there is more information for the book online.
3. graphic novels—narratives in comic book formats. It is a narrative work in which the story is conveyed to the reader
using comic form.
4. manga—a generic term for all comic books and graphic novels originated from Japan.They are written right to left
(like flipping through a book backwards), and top to bottom.
5. doodle fiction—literary presentation where the author incorporates doodle writing and drawings and handwritten
graphics in place of traditional font.
6. Text-Talk Novels---stories told almost completely in dialogue simulating social network exchanges. Blog, email, IM
narratives.
7. Chick Lit/ Chick Literature---is a genre fiction which addresses issues of modern womanhood, often humorously and
lighthearted.
8. Flash Fiction---is a style of fictional literature of extreme brevity. It is the art of writing a very short story.
9. Six-Word Flash Fiction—six-word story usually published in social media.
10. Science Fiction—is a genre of speculative fiction dealing with imaginative concepts such as futuristic science and
technology, space travel, time travel, faster than light travel, parallel universe, and extra terrestrial life.
11.Blog—a web log; a website containing short articles called posts that are changed regularly.
12. Creative Nonfiction—a genre of writing that uses literary styles and techniques to create factually accurate
narratives.
13. Hyperpoetry---digital poetry that uses links in hypertext mark ups.
