The Black Student Union (BSU), held its first meeting on campus this Friday, Sept. 7.

BSU’s President, William Wheeler, he stated “I was glad to see such a great number of freshman

students in attendance.”

The event brought on 27 new members to their chapter, nearly doubling the union in its

size, and making it one of the largest organizations on campus for the second year in a row.

During Friday’s event, BSU’s Parliamentarian Ashonda Underwood, spoke positively in regards

to the overall growth in percentage of black students on campus. She cited that there had been a

“2% growth since last year.”

The steady growth of black students on campus has increased, and Underwood discussed

ways to influence a continuing rise in that number. As a result of the event, BSU elected five

new officers in order to offer more leader positions to new and transfer students.

“The Union is a group that recognizes the culture of Black and African American

students, by holding events that is not exclusionary. The events held by BSU is open to anyone

that enjoys black culture,” Wheeler said.

BSU has planned out a semester full of exciting events which include a Soul Food dinner,

Game Nights, Campus Discussions, and a Wild n’ Out event against their sister chapter at

Eastern Kentucky University in November. The Black Students Union holds its meetings on the

first Thursday of every month, unless posted otherwise.
