Systematic Testing of
Lambda Sensors
For detailed test procedures Electrical faults Malfunction indicator lamp Defective catalytic converter
and test specifications refer to Mechanical damage (MIL) on Engine bearing damage due to
ESI[tronic]. Poisoning/contamination Driveability problems rough running
Thermal overload Unstable idling
Increased fuel consumption
Increased exhaust emissions
Test steps
Testing the lambda sensor heater Testing the lambda sensor signal
Lambda sensor
Check heater resistor at ambient Check signal profile
temperature.
Switching lambda sensor:
Signal swings between approx. 0.1 ...0.9 V
The greater the voltage excursion, the better
the signal
Test specifications OK? Frequency between 0.5 ...3 Hz
Lambda sensor defective No
See ESI[tronic] Voltage below 0.4 V ➔ lean mixture
Voltage above 0.5 V ➔ rich mixture
Yes
Wideband lambda sensor:
With lambda = 1 ➔ pump current approx. 0 mA
Warm-up engine. Pump current below 0 mA ➔ rich mixture
Measure heating current. Pump current above 0 mA ➔ lean mixture
