INTRODUCION
Minimally invasive surgery was launched by gynecologists in the old days. This Pioneering
action continued and gynecology remained a leading specialty in promoting and advancing
endoscopic techniques, which tremendously improved our patient’s surgical outcome

There are different forms of MIS in gynecology including hysteroscopy, conventional

laparoscopy, single port laparoscopy and robotic surgery. Despite the increasing popularity
of the robotic platform worldwide, conventional laparoscopy remains a solid and basic part
of everyday practice.

One of the most complex challenges that limit a wide scale implementation of laparoscopy
is lack of proper training among the majority of generalist worldwide. The reasons vary and
include lack of genuine desire to learn among senior gynecologists, the shallow learning
curve, and the lack of structured training in some residency programs and the fear of
complications.

Nowadays, our community is blessed by unlimited resources including the availability of

endoscopic instruments in most hospitals in our kingdom and the accumulation of expertise
with the return of well-trained Saudi surgeons from all over the world . Moreover , the
establishment of many state of art MIS units and the integration of MIS in the majority of the
local training programs. Fortunately , we noticed a strong desire among trainees and young
gynecologists to learn in order to provide the best care for the best interest of our patients.
We in King Saud University has recognized the urge to introduce a comprehensive
workshop to facilitate the learning process among our fellow gynecologists and residents .

We believe that a certified gynecologist who completely eliminates laparoscopy from his/her
practice should be questioned and seriously assisted in taking the necessary measures to
make that shift at least in the basic and minor procedures. There should be a low tolerance
to unjustified excuses.

We think that developing a strong interest in learning by attending local and international
educational events in addition to seeking mentorship will definitely make that goal
achievable

UPDATE
The large number and variety of lectures touching almost all the angles of MIS aims to
improve, enhance, refresh and strengthen knowledge around all aspects of MIS for both
practicing surgeons and/or those in training. Furthermore, these meetings and the
accompanying workshops have the potential to inspire our young residents to pursue more
focused training programs in the field of MIS.
Finally, we look forward to spread all concepts relevant to MIS among other health care
provides including nurses and colleagues from different disciplines.
Basic Workshop
In this work shop, we are going to focus on the basic and mandatory knowledge and skills
needed to start or keep doing level (I) and level (II) laparoscopic procedures. The candidate
should be able at the end of the workshop to be able to engage in those cases either as a
good assistant (if not previously practicing laparoscopic surgeries) or as a confident
surgeon if there is a previous training or experience.

Advanced Workshop
In this workshop, the focus will be on some advanced skills and details for those who are
already practicing or planning to practice level III and IV laparoscopic surgeries.
This workshop is supported with full day animal lab training where the candidate will have a
full chance to practice all the theory and skills acquired during the previous days.

The candidate should be able to perform complex and advanced gynecological MIS with
more knowledge, skills and confidence and accelerate the learning curve if already started
doing such cases, and will be able to start doing selected advanced cases and start the
learning curve if there was no experience at all with level III and IV cases. So, basically, the
aim of this workshop is to bridge the candidate from level I-II to level III-IV laparoscopy.
