When you progress to MPH Research, the program will change from coursework to

a time-based unit, where you will be working with experienced research supervisors
to design a 10-month research project. The project includes writing a project proposal,
undertaking a literature review, designing and implementing a study, analysing data,
and writing a thesis in an approved area relevant to public health.
Progression into MPH Research specialisation

You will be eligible to be considered for the Research specialisation if you have
completed the first year of Macquarie’s Master of Public Health and have met the
following requirements:

• Achieved a grade of distinction or above in unit Introduction to Epidemiology

and Biostatistics (HSYP802) or Advanced Research Methodologies in Health
(HSYP814); and
• Achieved a GPA of 5.5 out of 7.0 or above in 12 credit points of Year 1 HSYP core
MPH units.

Please note admission to the specialisation is also subject to the availability of a suitable
project and supervisor. A 2019 project list is attached, and you should contact potential
supervisors to discuss projects and your interests before enrolling.
What is required?
To enrol you into the time-based unit, we will need confirmation from you that you
have:
1) completed all the required units for Year 1 (including exempt units)
2) identified a project area and have a project title
3) completed the ‘Assignment of the Student IP’ form as part of the research enrolment.
Please complete Section 1 of the attached ‘MRES Year 1 to Year 2 Progression’ form.
Print out an internal transcript from eStudent and attach it to the form, complete the
attached ‘Assignment of Student Intellectual Property (IP)’ form, and return all completed
forms to your Faculty HDR Office no later than 30th November 2018.

Your Faculty will complete Section 2 of the ‘MRES Year 1 to Year 2 Progression’ form.

Once the faculty has completed Section 2, they will forward the forms to Higher Degree
Research Office (HDRO) for further processing.

If you are experiencing difficulties with your studies and would like to discuss options
regarding your progression, please contact your faculty HDR Office.

What will happen next?

If you meet all the necessary requirements for progression, HDRO will process your
forms and enrol you into the MPH Research program.
Your enrolment into MPH Research is likely to be finalised by mid/late January 2019
and will be listed as commencing 1st January 2019. When finalised you will be sent a
Research Student Profile by HDRO confirming your enrolment.

Your Faculty HDR Office or MPH Res Adviser will contact you with details of any MPH
Research events.
Please be aware that if your research involves:
• children under 18 years old: you need to apply for clearance prior to conducting
your research;
• animal, human or biosafety: together with your supervisor, you will apply for
ethics clearance prior to conducting your research.

Scholarship for Year 2 – Domestic candidates only

Your eligibility for a Year 2 scholarship in 2019 will be considered on a competitive
basis towards the end of December 2018 (after Year 1 results are available) taking into
account your SNG for Year 1 and any other research output you may have. The total
number of scholarships awarded will depend on the scholarship budget and the
