“How does Carl Jung’s theory of Archetypes apply to the


characters in La Belle et La Bête (1946), and how does this
theory manifest itself into later adaptations?”

Paragraph 4: Talking about how the collective unconscious is sectioned into archetypes such as the ‘persona’, the ‘shadow’ and the
‘anima/animus’, and more that can be derived from stories such as the mother, or hero archetype.

Paragraph 5: Showing evidence for how in La Belle et la Bête and the Disney adaptation , Belle is portrayed as the heroine archetype,
showing an example of how this is shown in la Belle Et La Bête and Beauty and The Beast.

Paragraph 6: How Belle also shows a clear sense of persona within La Belle Et La Bete, giving evidence of how this is shown.

Paragraph 7: Focusing on how this same clear sense of persona is shown in Disney's adaptation through song, making references to what
is being said, however making the comparison to the different type of acceptance of persona the two Belles having within their respected
film.

Paragraph 8: How Belle shows the shadow archetype within both films, including a quote referencing how this applies to Belle, and how it
includes the Beast as a depiction of her shadow.

Paragraph 9: Counter argument against this focusing on how the Beast is not a her shadow but instead her animus, including supporting
quotes.

Paragraph 10: How this is then shown within the men that surround her in La Belle et La Bete including evidence.

Paragraph 11: How this also applies to the 1991 Disney version, however showcased in a different format. (song)

Paragraph 12: Highlighting how the beast however contains both traits that are shown within the animus (being a man of power etc) and
how this is then shown in both films too.

Proposed Conclusion

To conclude, Jung’s theory of archetypes is clearly expressed both in La Belle et la Bête (1946)
and Disney’s adaptation Beauty and the Beast (1991), with Belle representing a heroine
character, protecting her father in both films and giving in to her animus, the Beast,
representing the shadow in which lies the part of her personality she shies away from.
