Learning Characteristics: This curriculum addresses some scenarios regarding living in
Poverty. Its an interactive software that prompts you to make dally decisions which actually
affect you. The student will need to have a basic reading skill in order to do this simulation. A
basic knowledge of factors in independent living such as insurance plans, housing, etc. This
curriculum would be appropriate for adults living independently or for high schoolers on the
verge of making the leap towards independent living.
Transition Needs: Students will need to take into consideration all of the possible expenses
related to independent living. The simulation includes not only what one might plan on such as
insurance or housing payments but also things you may not plan on such as a broken window. It
gives several choices in each scenario and forces students to consider the consequences of
certain choices, especially as the money they have in the bank begins to dwindle,
Other Features: The main feature of this curriculum is the simulation which teaches by
experience more than explicit instruction, The website is also connected to a non-profit urban
ministry.
Evidence/Research/Promising Practices: Though the website does not make it explicit, the
evidence-based practice of goal-setting and problem solving could easily be connected with this
curriculum. It also makes use of the evidence based practices regarding the use of simulations
to teach purchasing skills as well as social skils indifferent contexts.
