Manufacturing Processes Tutorial 2 (coin manufacture) Solution

Part (a)

(i) Merits – Hot extrusion is fast, convenient, no directional properties

Demerits – Hot extrusion, hence soft, poor tolerance, EDM very slow, dull
matte surface (HAZ = heat affected zone)

(ii) Merits – Very strong product, excellent tolerance, good tensile and fatigue
strength, wear resistance, shining surface.

Demerits – Scrap material, directional properties

(iii) Merits – No waste material, no directional properties, fast production.

Good tolerance if shrinkage allowed for.

Demerits – Expensive raw materials and tooling, brittle (porous) product.

(iv) Merits – Fast economical production, no directional properties.

Demerits - Moderately strong, poor wear resistance, poor tolerances because

metal shrinks when solidified from melt and cooled to room temp.

Part (b)

Method (ii) resembles best Singapore mint because it gives strong, wear
resistant products with good tolerances and shining surface

Part (c)

Answer iv (2 marks); Answer iii (1 mark)
