ACS

- Leading cause of death in SCD patients

- Approx. 50% of SCD pts will have an episode of ACS
- Definition: intrapulmonary VOC, new radiodensity on CXR + fever +/- respiratory
symptoms
- ACS vs pneumonia
- Severity index: mild, moderate, severe
o Hypoxia = predictor of severity and outcome
- In adults, greater disease severity compared to children due to higher incidence of
bone marrow and fat emboli
