Lesson Idea Name: Review of the 5 Regions of Georgia

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 3rd Grade
Content Standard Addressed: S3L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the similarities
and differences between plants, animals, and habitats found within geographic regions (Blue Ridge
Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plains, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau) of Georgia.

Technology Standard Addressed: 1. Empowered Learner: Students leverage technology to take an active
role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning
sciences.

Selected Technology Tool:

☒ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☐ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms

☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☐ Teacher-Paced ☒ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): As a student response tool, Socrative fulfills part of the UDL framework
by providing a different way for students to show what they know by participating in a quiz that is set up as a
game (see lesson description for specifics).

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.

This activity will be used as a review of a unit lesson on the five regions of Georgia. Prior to the activity,
students will have studied these five regions along with their respective habitats, climates, and animal and
plant life. They will have discussed the effects of pollution in Georgia and some sustainable ways that they can
help reduce these effects. The teacher will introduce the activity at the end of the lesson as a review of what
the children have learned.

Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☐ Assess prior knowledge ☐ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☒ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☐ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity: The teacher will supply each student with a
classroom iPad and help them to access the Socrative app. The teacher will also supply each student with a
copy of the “5 Regions of Georgia” picture to reference during the quiz. The teacher will launch the quiz as a
“Space Race” from his/her Socrative account on the computer. Each child will be considered his/her own
“team” and the teacher must choose the correct number of teams for this activity. If an interactive white
board is available, project the Race screen on the board to show the progress of the students towards the
finish line. After setting up the activity, start the race and allow the children to enter their answers.
Altogether, this activity should take about 5-10 minutes at the very end of the class.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☒ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☒ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not?
I will pre-select correct answers to all of the multiple-choice and true/false answers as this activity will be
used as a review and assessment of student knowledge. The answers to question #10 will vary and so no
correct answer is set. I will display the correct answers at the end of the activity so that the students who
answered any incorrectly will have a chance to see what they missed.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

This activity is designed as a final review of the material in the science unit on the Five Regions of Georgia . It
should be the last activity in the class and, depending on student responses, it will be the last activity in the
unit (unless there is a large amount of student errors, in which case another activity should be designed after
assessment to review missed on misunderstood material).

How will the data be used? At the end of the activity, the race scores will be displayed on the white board.
The data will be used by the teacher to assess student learning and to determine if it is enough to move on to
the next scheduled topic. Scores will not be kept for a grade but will be kept for teacher reference/proof of
student learning. In the case of a considerable amount of student error in any/all areas of the assessment, the
teacher will need to review the content material and perhaps discuss the errors with the students in order to
clarify.
Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. I hope that this activity will be a fun and engaging way
to close out the unit on the Five Regions of Georgia. I hope to be able to assess student knowledge to ensure
that moving on to the next topic is appropriate.

Reflective Practice: I think that this activity will be a fun way of closing the unit on the Five Regions of
Georgia. After designing it, I think that another way to help expand student learning is to maybe allow them
to create their own quiz on the material. Maybe after using the “Space Race,” the children will be able to see

how it will work and then be allowed the freedom to choose their own questions and provide answers. This
quiz could then be used as an engaging opener maybe for a classroom presentation to parents on the Five
Regions of Georgia with the parents taking the student-created quiz as a form of “preassessment” of their
knowledge, giving the students the opportunity to tailor their presentations to their audience’s needs (as if
they were the teachers).
