CONTEXTUAL FACTORS

Community

The town of Howard, is the county seat of Miner County located in the southeastern part

of South Dakota. The town is located along highway 34. With a population of around 800,

Howard is a small town which is mostly comprised of Caucasians with a mix of other ethnicities

such as Hispanic/Latino, Native American, and African Americans. Howard is surrounded by

farmland with rich soil. Howard is mostly a farming community; with a few local business inside

the town. The community supports the school. The school is currently undergoing some updates

such as a new weight room, wrestling room, and concessions. The school also recently has under

gone renovations such as an updated FACs classroom, and a new gym floor.

District/School

The Howard school district has 31 teachers with an average of 14 years of experience.

The instructional staff is made up of 84.85% that have bachelor’s degrees and 15.15% that have

their masters. The student body is made up of 268 students K-12 with the majority of the

students being Caucasian. Howard had a 100% of their student graduate last year and 87% the

year before. The students graduating are graduating with 57% English collage readiness and 50%

math collage readiness. Howard has 14% of their students with a disability that is higher than the

state average. Howard also has over 14% of its students that are economically disadvantaged and

5% English language learners.

Classroom

The 7th grade class is made up of 22 students, 11 males and 11 females. The 7th Grade has

Physical Education every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during 7th period. Their class periods

are 45mineuts long. The students are excited for their P.E days. When the students enter the gym

they are to change then walk till the rest of the class is out of the locker room. After all of the

students are out of the locker room we start class with a warm up/fitness activity. The class is

built up of a variety of achieving students. There are three students on IEPs. Theses IEP students

generally do well with the activities in class. They do have their test read them. There are a few

students that struggle with gross motor skill. When we are doing activities that they struggle with

we generally try to slow down that activity so they have a chance to see success.

Implications for Instruction

The 7th grade students have Physical Education Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for 45

minutes. When the students enter the gym the go to the locker room and change. Once they are

changed and ready for P.E they walk in the gym until all of the students are in the gym. (I give

them 5 minutes to change and be in the gym.) Once all of the students are in the gym they do

their warm up activity. After the warm up the students line up on the baseline and we go over the

days objectives. Which takes about 5 minutes. If I need to implement further instruction I blow

my whistle and have the student’s line up at half court this way I have all of my students’

attention. Students usually are physically active for about 30 min of the class period. At the end

of class I give my students 8 min to shower and change. This is the 7th grades first year of doing

fitness gram testing so there are no previous scores. When students are testing students on IEP’s

can go to the para’s room to have the test read to them.

about getting out of school early so it was hard to get the students on task, but once we got
started the class period went pretty smooth. After the warm up we reviewed what we covered in
the previous lesson. Students seemed to remember most of the content with a few hints. After the
review we went over the different types of shots in pickleball. After going over the shots I broke
the students up into small groups and then they played king of the court. Today’s lesson seemed
a little rushed because of the shorten school day. Next time I have a short school day I will

Lesson #4 – Flexibility/Tumbling Circuit

Name: Matt Goth Date:

Grade Level: 7th grade Time:
School: Howard Jr. High

Reflection from prior lesson:

 Today students took a skill test over serving in pickleball. If I give another skill
test I will have them be peer or self-assessments. As I was giving the skill test I
was able to give good individual feedback which I think will help them on their
summative test. During the skill test the rest of the students played king of the
court. I think they really enjoy playing king of the court. I like king of the court
because it allows the games to be completive because the teams play other teams
that are doing well and the teams that are struggling play each other. It also allows
the students to play more teams during a class period then they would if they were
playing full games.

Lesson Goal(s)/Standards:
 Standard 1: The physically literate individual demonstrates proficiency in a variety of
motor skills and movement patterns.
 Standard 2: The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles,

Lesson #5 – Tournament Play

Name: Matt Goth Date:
Grade Level: 7th Grade Time:
School: Howard Jr. High

Reflection from prior lesson:

 The students are really starting to pick up on the game of pickleball. Today we started
working on playing full games of pickleball and using the different types of strategies to
enhance their gameplay. On modification that I have been using is the tennis rackets
instead of pickleball paddles. I feel this is working well and the students using them are
benefiting from them. One thing that they struggle with is being able to control their hits.
I feel for the next lesson I will talk to them about controlling your hits and trying to get
the ball to stay on the court. The rest of the class is a good job with hitting and controlling
their hits in pickleball. They seem to be enjoying the game and are getting a lot of
movement in throughout the class period.

Lesson Goal(s)/Standards:
 Standard 1: The physically literate individual demonstrates proficiency in a variety of
motor skills and movement patterns.
 Standard 2: The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles,

Lesson #6 – Summative test/continue tournament play

Name: Matt Goth Date:

Grade Level:7th Grade Time:
School: Howard Jr. High

Reflection from prior lesson:

 Today reviewed the game of pickleball after our warm up. This was to get the students
ready to start the pickleball tournament. For the pickleball tournament I picked to the
teams to make them more even. The students played games to 11. Some of the games
went faster than the others which caused some students to lose interest. If I do a
tournament again I may use some teams of 3 so all of the students can be playing at once.
On the side they would be on or two team that couldn’t be on the court due to lack of
space in the gym. These teams had exercise stations on the side to keep them busy while
they were waiting to play their game. We didn’t get all the way through the tournament
today so we will finish the tournament after the students take the summative test next
class. Be for students were able to leave I had them line up on half court and they had to
tell me on strategy that they used during todays lesson.

Reflection Log

Lesson 1 – This was the first time that the 7th graders had been introduced to pickleball. Students
quickly related the game to tennis and badminton. The students seem to be excited to learn a new
game. Today the students took the pre-test the average score was a 50.5% this means the students
have little knowledge of pickleball going into the unit. After pickleball I explained the pickleball
court and the serve. Students worked on their serves while playing small games.

Lesson 2 – Todays lesson was shortened due to a short school day. With the students being
excited about getting out of school early so it was hard to get the students on task, but once we
got started the class period went pretty smooth. After the warm up we reviewed what we covered
in the previous lesson. Students seemed to remember most of the content with a few hints. After
the review we went over the different types of shots in pickleball. After going over the shots I
broke the students up into small groups and then they played king of the court. Todays lesson
seemed a little rushed because of the shorten school day. Next time I have a short school day I
will shorten the warm up so my students have more time to play and learn the content.
Lesson 3 – Today students took a skill test over serving in pickleball. If I give another skill test I
will have them be peer or self-assessments. As I was giving the skill test I was able to give good
individual feedback which I think will help them on their summative test. During the skill test
the rest of the students played king of the court. I think they really enjoy playing king of the
court. I like king of the court because it allows the games to be completive because the teams
play other teams that are doing well and the teams that are struggling play each other. It also
allows the students to play more teams during a class period then they would if they were
playing full games.

Lesson 4 – The students are really starting to pick up on the game of pickleball. Today we
started working on playing full games of pickleball and using the different types of strategies to
enhance their gameplay. On modification that I have been using is the tennis rackets instead of
pickleball paddles. I feel this is working well and the students using them are benefiting from
them. One thing that they struggle with is being able to control their hits. I feel for the next
lesson I will talk to them about controlling your hits and trying to get the ball to stay on the
court. The rest of the class is a good job with hitting and controlling their hits in pickleball. They
seem to be enjoying the game and are getting a lot of movement in throughout the class period.

Lesson 5 –Today reviewed the game of pickleball after our warm up. This was to get the
students ready to start the pickleball tournament. For the pickleball tournament I picked to the
teams to make them more even. The students played games to 11. Some of the games went faster
than the others which caused some students to lose interest. If I do a tournament again I may use
some teams of 3 so all of the students can be playing at once. On the side they would be on or
two team that couldn’t be on the court due to lack of space in the gym. These teams had exercise
stations on the side to keep them busy while they were waiting to play their game. We didn’t get
all the way through the tournament today so we will finish the tournament after the students take
the summative test next class. Be for students were able to leave I had them line up on half court
and they had to tell me on strategy that they used during today’s lesson.

Lesson 6 – Today was the last day of the unit. At the beginning of the unit students took the
summative test. I decided add a new question to the test to see what the student’s favorite
Physical education unit was. This was for me to see what my students are interested in as I plan
more units. After that we went into our warm up and then right into finishing their tournament. I
feel this is because the students in this class enjoy competition. The students seemed to enjoy the
tournament. Overall I feel this unit was a success. I feel they students enjoyed learning a new
game and they also learn some new skills that can be applied in other games though out the
school year.

ASSESSMENT
Return to ToC

Pre-Assessment

 Students were given a pickleball pre-test. This test was to gage the knowledge that the
students had of pickleball. The test consisited of 8 fill in the blank questions, 6 true and
false questions, 3 short answers and 5 label questions. The students scored low on this
test because this was the first time that pickleball had been introduced to them.

Class Average = 50.5%

Ongoing Assessment

Lesson #1: Students were given a pickleball pretest. This test consisted of questions gaging their
basic knowledge of pickleball. The test had 8 fill in the blank questions, 6 true and false
questions, 3 short answers and 5 label questions. The students scored low on this test because
this was the first time that pickleball had been introduced to them.

Lesson #2: Today as students were playing pickleball I was observing them. If I seen a student
that didn’t seem to understand a rule or skill. I would go and talk to them and help them better
understand the rule. At the end of the class I did a verbal exit slip students had to tell me one rule
of pickleball before they could go and change.

Lesson #3: Students were assessed on the serving producers of pickleball. This assessment was
done using a performance based test. Students were given a rubric and where told how I would
score this assessment.

Lesson #4: Students where assess by both observation and verbal exit slips. Students where
observed during game play to see how well they work with others and how they were playing the
game of pickleball. The verbal exit slip was every student had to tell me on strategy they used
during class.

Lesson #5: Students competed a nutrition assessment in a group. They were in a group of 4 or 5
and they had to go to different cones and answer the questions on the card. Once they finished
answering the question, they had to perform the exercise on the other card. We had a discussion
of the answers at the end of class. Many of the students knew the answers to a lot of the
questions. I was very pleased with how well they did. A lot of groups struggled thinking of
proteins that weren’t meats. Other than that one question, students did very well on this
assessment.

Lesson #6: Students completed a summative test. This test was the same as the pre-test with one
question added to it. The question was. What is your favorite activity in Physical Education. I
asked this question so I could see what activities my students enjoyed the best. The test had 8 fill
in the blank questions, 6 true and false questions, 3 short answers and 5 label questions. The
students scored low on this test because this was the first time that pickleball had been
introduced to them.

Post Assessment

Students completed a summative test. This test was the same as the pre-test with one question
added to it. The question was. What is your favorite activity in physical education? I asked this
question so I could see what activities my students enjoyed the best. The test had 8 fill in the
blank questions, 6 true and false questions, 3 short answers and 5 label questions. The students
scored low on this test because this was the first time that pickleball had been introduced to
them.

DATA ANALYSIS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Return to ToC

Individual students

At the beginning of the unit the studetns took a pre-test where the class average was
50.5%. This was the first time the students were introduced to pickleball so I wasn’t surprised by
the low scores. At the end of the unit the students took a post-test where the class scored an
average of 98.9%. All of the students showed growth between the two lessons which I belive was
because this was the first time they were introduced to pickleball.

Whole Class

The class shows huge advanced in knowledge between the pre-test and post-test. This was
mainly because the students haven’t been introduced to pickleball before this unit. When they
took the pre-test they had no idea what the game was, but by the time the post-test came around
they had a good understanding of the game and their scores show this.

Recommendations

After looking at my data from this unit I though overall it went well. My unit was only 6

days because of the students only having P.E three times a week. Throughout this unit there were

a lot of interruptions such as musicals, holidays, and late starts. These all cut into the amount of

time the students actually spent with the content. Even though they scored well on the final

assessment I feel with more time working on the content the answers in the short answer test

would have been better. I didn’t want to push this unit after two weeks the students start to lose

interest in units and I start to have more classroom management issues.

My cooperating teacher had different resources for warm ups that I used throughout the

unit. I liked the different cards and activity dot pads. These activities allowed for a change of

pace for our warm ups which got the students excited and ready to learn. Another resource I used

was P.E. Central this is a website that has many different lesson plans and activities that you can

use. I used this resource to help me refresh on the rules of pickleball.

Another resource I used was from my Individual dual sports class in collage. In this class we did

a pickleball unit and developed some lessons and test questions. These helped me set a good

foundation during this unit.

SUMMARY OF STUDENT PROGRESS

Example: Letter to parents

Dear Parent or Guardian of Student 1,

My name is Mathew Goth and I am currently student teaching in your kids Physical
Education class. I am in my last semester at Dakota State University in Madison, SD. I am
Majoring In Physical Education with a minor in health and computers.

Over the past two week our class has been working on the pickleball unit. To start the
pickleball unit the students took a pre-test. After the pre-test I realized that the class had never
heard of pickleball before and it was a completely new game to all of them

Student 1 always shows up to physical education with a positive attitude. He or she

always works hard and encouraged his peers. When he is struggling he isn’t afraid to ask for help
or ways that he could improve. His

Student 1 scored a 42% on the pre-test and a 100% on the post test. His or her grades
show their hard work during class. The class average on the pre-test was a 50.5% which he or
she was just under. The class average for the post-test was a 98.9% which he or she was above.

I enjoyed the opportunity to teach your child. Your child works hard and has a positive
attitude almost every day. If you have any questions you can contact me at matt.goth@k12.sd.us.

Sincerely,

Matt Goth
