Lahore - Pakistan
ENGLAND
1989

During early 1989, I was in England to attend a Training Programme at

Derby, Engineering School of Engineering, sponsored by the British
Council, Government of United Kingdom, since 29th December 1988.
The Training completed on 23rd March 1989; and was expecting my wife,
Farzana Ahmad Khan to join me in England in London the next day on
24th March 1989. I had planned to avail some leave, which, was due to
me and spend some time in England and Europe with my wife as a
sightseeing and leisure/ pleasure programme.

FARZANA ARRIVES AT HEATHROW

On 23th, I stayed in the hotel provided by the British Council and roamed
about the city. I just wandered around the city waiting for my wife,
Farzana who was reaching London the next day.

In the evening of 24th, our host, a family friend, took me from the Hotel to
their residence, where I spent the night and next day in the evening we
went to Heathrow to receive her. She arrived at Heathrow Airport by PIA
at Terminal 3 at 15:45 where we were available to receive her; and
brought her to our host place; and a new phase of our journey started.

We made our friend’s house our base camp and started roaming about
in and around London. All the time we had to travel, we used to buy the
London Transport Travel Card, valid for the bus and the Under
Ground. This made our traveling economical and swift.

I had been to the places in London earlier, therefore, the revisit was
easier and we started our visit from the most prominent places of
London. For the first four or five days we remained in London and saw
the places like Parliament House, Big Ben, Victoria Park, Westminster
Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circle, Trafalgar Square, 10
Downing Street, Madame Tsade, National Museum, Regent Park, Tower
Bridge and many other places in and around London. It was an
experience of its own kind. We, most of the time, together and some
time with the host family were roaming here and there freely and
leisurely enjoying every moment of our stay there. It was quite an
exciting experience to visit the places again with Farzana which was our
dream. We were quite happy and enthusiastic about our visit and
enjoying every bit of it.

TOWER BRIDGE
1989

Tower Bridge is a combined Bascule and Suspension Bridge in London

built between 1886 and 1894. The bridge crosses the River Thames
close to the Tower of London and has become an Iconic Symbol of
London.

Tower Bridge is sometimes confused with London Bridge, situated some

0.5 mi (0.80 km) upstream.

Tower Bridge and London are synonymous. I had already been to this
place but still was feeling the thrill to be there. Now, both of us together
were looking at every inch of this iconic monument.

THE PARLIAMENT HOUSE
BIG BEN

The House of Parliament the Palace of Westminster, the meeting place

of the House of Commons and the House of Lords of the United
Kingdom.

Big Ben is the name for the Great Bell of the Clock at the North End of
the Parliament House in London. The official name of the tower in which
Big Ben is located was originally the Clock Tower, but it was renamed
Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II of
the Great Britain.

The Tower Bridge, Parliament and the Big Ben are the most prominent
places which really represent the Great Britain. It was our biggest desire
that one day we two could see these places together and our dream
came true when we saw all those places associated with this Small
Island with Big Stories.

Trafalgar Square is a public square in the City of Westminster, Central

London, built around the area formerly known as Chairing Cross. Its
name commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar with France and Spain
which took place on 21 October 1805 off the coast of Cape Trafalgar. In
the square there is erected Nelson Column with its lions. It is one of the
most visited place of London. During training while in London I had seen
this place many a time. Now it was my desire to see it with my wife. So
saw it together and enjoyed a lot.

United Kingdom resides during his incumbency as PM. No. 10 is the
house number of the is also known in the United Kingdom as Number
10, is the number of the house of Prime Minister, usually known 10

residence of one of the strongest Prime Minister of the World.

It was a scene to see, the Residence of the Prime Minister of United

Kingdom; so simple and thinly guarded.

MADAME TUSSAUD’S
WAX MUSEUM
LONDON

Madame Tussauds, a Wax Museum in London with smaller museums in

a number of other major cities as well, was founded by Wax Sculptor
Marie Tussaud.

Madame Tussauds is a major Tourist Attraction in London, displaying

the waxworks of famous and historic people and also of popular film
characters.

We had heard a lot about this museum before we came to London.

When we actually were there our excitement did know no bounds; and
were very keen to visit the place. We went there early in the morning
and lined up in the queue for some time; and then we were there inside
the museum. We were almost lost in the environs and just taking
photographs as displayed below. I still recollect every moment we spent
there.

WINDSOR CASTLE

Windsor Castle is a Royal Residence at Windsor in the County of

Berkshire. It is known for its association with the English and British
Royal Family. Windsor Castle is about 30 KM from the place we were
living. One day the host family with all their members decided to take us
to Windsor Castle for a picnic. When we reached there, we saw a lot of
people enjoying here and there and some were visiting the Castel. We
also, at first saw the Castle and then visited other places.

During those days a major portion of the Castle was closed for public
due to a fire incident and was under repair. We saw what we could see.
It was quite impressive and we enjoyed a lot.

OXFORD

One day we made a plan to visit Oxford, famous, for its Education
Institutions. We went there by road in the morning and stayed there for
the whole day. Hearing about the city and its Education Institutions since
our childhood, it was an amazing experience to see those by ourselves.
We saw a number of collages, the classrooms; met students and
teachers and talked to them and discussed small matters. We had had
tea and snacks in the campus and enjoyed very much. We even went to
the canal and saw the students rowing there.

In the evening we came back by a slow passenger train to London; and

had very different experience.

BIRMINGHAM

We went on traveling according to our convenience by rail or road in

England. We went to Birmingham to see a friend and stayed with him for
a few days. Again making Birmingham a base camp we visited the
places around. At first we went to Coventry, a place near Birmingham

The National Exhibition Centre (NEC) is located in Birmingham. We

learnt about and went there. When we reached in the Centre an
Exhibition of Dairy Product was going. It was our first experience of a
place. We saw the whole Exhibition and enjoyed everything. The people
were very nice and hospitable. We also took some snacks in the Corner
meant for this purpose. They gave me a membership form and I
received the literature for quite a long time.

COVENTRY

Coventry is a city in the West Midland, England. Coventry is 19 miles (31

km) East-Southeast of Birmingham. One day we went there and saw all
the places of tourists’ value in the city.

THE RUINS OF THE OLD CHURCH

The remains of St Michael's, a 14th-Century Gothic Church, in the shape

of the ruined shell after its bombing during the Second World War was
one of the prominent place to be seen in Coventry which we visited and
remained there for quite a long time learnt a lot about the historical
aspects of the place.

The new St Michael's Cathedral has been built after the destruction of
the former as well. We saw the new church in detail even inside of it.

Ford's Hospital, Coventry, traditionally known as Grey Friars Hospital, is

a 16th century Alms-House in Greyfriars Lane, Coventry. It was founded
by the merchant William Ford to provide accommodation for elderly

HALIFAX
WEST YORKSHIRE
1989

Halifax is in the Westshire, England. The town had been a centre of

woolen manufacturing dealing through the Piece Hall.
We had a cousin living in Halifax with his family. We were going to
Glasgow and had made the necessary arrangements accordingly. We
had a stopover at Manchester, when Farzana showed her desire to see
the cousin and his family in Halifax, not very far away from Manchester.
So we detoured and went there by a train. My cousin’s father was there
at the Railway Station to receive who took to his house. They were very
happy as it was really a surprise to them.
There in Halifax we stayed for a few days and saw the places around.

PIECE HALL – HALIFAX
ENGLAND

The Piece Hall was built as a Cloth Hall for Handloom Weavers to sell
the woolen cloth "pieces" they had produced. It opened with 315
separate rooms arranged around a central open courtyard. One day we
visited this place with our hostess; and when we went it was really a fun
to see the place and its surroundings.

SHIBDEN HALL

ENGLAND

Shibden Hall is about a mile away from Halifax; and dates back 1420
AD, located in a very big park. It offers visitors a fascinating journey
through the lives of the people who lived and worked here through the
history.
While at Halifax we learnt about this place and I with Farzana visited it.
This House was really giving a fascinating look. It was well preserved
giving the look of a historical old house. I still can recollect all the details
of place.

ENGLISH FRIENDS
IN
HALIFAX

While staying at Halifax, in the evening, we used to go out for walking in

the nearby open place meant for this purpose. One day we came across
an old lady living in that area. After having some conversion, we were
almost friends that we started visiting them at their place.

BIRTHDAY

During our stay one of them had his birthday. They formally invited us
that evening. As a token of respect, we bought a beautiful Coaster Set
and presented as a gift. They were very happy.
They specially arranged delights which we enjoyed and stayed with
them till late at night on their insistence. The lady also gave Farzana a
beautiful handmade doll. We talked about all the subject on earth in an
amicable way; and enjoyed the evening very much.

HAWORTH
WEST YORKSHIRE
ENGLAND

BRONTE SISTERS
We had some focus on centers of literatures, especially the places of
famous poets and other literary figures. While at Halifax we heard about
Haworth, the place of Bronte Sisters. It increased our anxiety to see the
place, so, one day we went to Haworth, about 16kms West of Bradford.
On our arrival we saw a beautiful small town and the Bronte Sisters
House (Bronte Parsonage) near a Church and a Graveyard which
reminded me some scenes form Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. We
remained in the town for quite a long time and went outside the town,
also, in the wide fields – Beauty – Beauty – all around.

HOT AIR BALLOONS
YORKSHIRE

One day we were driving from Halifax to Southport. While we

were passing by the open fields of Yorkshire, we came across
a beautiful scene. A lot number of people were gathered
around Hot Air Balloons to fly. We stopped there and watched
for a while standing by the road. I, then, drew their attention
and asked if we could come to them and enjoy watching the
scene. They happily agreed. We entered in their private area
and stayed there for quite a long time and watched the balloons
and heating process very closely; and other arrangements they
were making to fly the balloons. A flew balloons flew while we
were there and enjoyed saw those rising in the air.
These were friendly rides by a group of friends.
After some time we thanked them and bade goodbye.

Manchester in the past was known for its Textile Industry, the

squatters for the labor in the town even in 1989.
We saw many prominent places in the town and enjoyed a lot.

STRATFORD UPON AVON

Stratford-upon-Avon is a town in the Stratford on Avon District

in Warwickshire, England. The town is a popular, as it is the
birthplace of English playwright and poet William Shakespeare.
Anyone who has some knowledge of English Language knows
about William Shakespeare. We, also, were student of English
Language during Graduation. We, not only had read about him,
and his works, but had the ‘Complete Works of Shakespeare’
with us pride. When I was in England and waiting for my wife, I
already had made a programme to visit this town. So when we
got the opportunity we were there in the town and spent the
whole day seeing every place associated with great English
poet and playwright.
At his place we also could see the sources of his famous
works, which, mostly were Italian.
We enjoyed every place and took some photographs which I
place here.

During our stay in England we made all efforts to see as
many as we could. So we did so and made our trip as
enjoyable as possible. In this regard we are thankful to
our relations, friends, the English People and GB
Authorities and all the people with whom we came in
contact. Everybody was kind and help; and with Grace
of God Almighty nothing unpleasant either in action,
gestures or verbatim, we came across.

I, Maqsood Ahmad Khan, after having the
Master Degree in Economics from the
Government College, Lahore (Punjab
University) in 1972, qualified the
Competitive Examination for Civil Services
of Pakistan 1974 and joined Traffic
(Transportation & Commercial Group) of
Pakistan Railways. I rose to the level of
General Manager (Welfare & Training); and
completed my services on 4th March 2010,
after attaining superannuation. During the
service, I could visit many a countries, viz
Belgium, Canada, Egypt , England, France,
Holland, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia,
Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri
Lanka, Sudan, Switzerland, UAE, USA, West
Germany in connection with foreign
assignments, training, meetings, visits and
studies; alone or with the members of my
family. To make theses journeys
memorable, the use of the camera was a
tool with me. The collection of the
photographs thus taken, when seen at the
later years, gave an account of travels
round the world, which I am sharing with
others as information; memoir or self-
