Students will initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative

discourse including one-on-one, small and whole group discussions as well as


teacher led discussions through pair and shares, turn-and-talks, socratic seminar,
philosophical chairs and whole class discussion in order to prepare for upcoming
writing topics.

Discussion:

--Partner up with someone. That will be your tag team.


--One will start in the inner discussion circle while the
other is in the observation circle behind. You may tag
team and switch at any time or when a leader calls
switch.
--Discussion should be around the text and use evidence
directly from the text.

Leaders will:

--Run the discussion


--Ask follow-up questions
--Ask for textual references
--Move on to a new question
--Make sure there is a fair chance for everyone to speak
--Call tag-team at any time
--Give participants the opportunity to talk to their
partner or someone next to them prior to responding
Socratic Grading:

A
Participate by introducing a new point not from class or
the discussion and supporting it with original evidence.
These responses will allow for some type of relevant
insight or a different perspective.
B
Participate by agreeing or disagreeing with others or
restating a point from class or the discussion and using
additional text evidence to support your reasoning.
C
Participate by agreeing or disagreeing with others or
restating a point all with reasoning.

*****The only way to fail a socratic is to not participate


at all. It is a performance based task, so you must
contribute through speaking.
