Script / Outline

1. Introduction - Introduce myself and what exactly I will be doing

a. Making a video watching the “Make It Happen” commercial by Maybelline to

argue if it effectively uses pathos, logos, and ethos to promote it’s intended goal

2. Thesis - "Make It Happen", a brand commercial by Maybelline New York ineffectively

uses pathos, ethos, and logos in an attempt to make women feel empowered and

successful, using the hasty generalization that women want to improve the way they look

to fit into social expectations-- a tactic that other forms of media replicate over and over--

to promote their brand.

3. Direct sexual appropriation

a. Women can be successful by being beautiful and this gets them going in life

b. We are not in control of our sexuality and physical appearance, being withheld

only to make ourselves vulnerable

4. Planned parenthood’s explanation of women’s social expectations: girls and women are

generally expected to dress in typically feminine ways and be polite, accommodating, and

nurturing.

5. Media depictions of men and women as fundamentally "different" appear to perpetuate

misconceptions - despite the lack of evidence… As an example, workplace studies show

that women who go against the caring, nurturing feminine stereotype may pay dearly for

it when being hired or evaluated.
