Overall it seems tobe that Juliet isnot a happy person rather she is hiding her true feelings. Dawsey Adams, is also a character in The Gurensey and Potato peel pie Society. He wa Joie’ first Guernsey correspondent and close friend overall, he was & happy person, He became a part of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. At first, he did not want to be part ofthis group however he would only attend because he was starving from the war and the literary society offer foo: ————__———— "There was one day at the Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society where Dawsey Adams just ‘wanted to get his food and go home and eat it there, however he was happy that he did not make that choie and stayed there, One article which can relate toDawseys happiness is “The Alchemy cof Suffering” by Matthew Ricard. As soon, theres a quote that reads “Recognize suffering, eliminate its soure, end itby practicing the pat (39) meaning we can sufferjustdon’ttetit /\\\ ‘consume you, Just ike Dawsey Adams went through some things asa child yet he was able to J find happiness throughout time, In the article, “Formula for Happiness" by Arthur C. Brooks he! / states, “To pursue the happiness within our reach, we do best to pour ourselves int fit, family, )/ ‘community and meaningful work. To share happiness, we need to fight for Tree enterprise and strive to make its blessings accessible to all.” This relates to Dawsey, when Dawsey was helping people during the war in The Guerenoey and Puno Pee Pie Society by geting seawater | ‘them to cook wit, he did not have todo this but it was an act of kindness he ended up having a hard time, Although a German soldier named Christan begins helping him without a word. They ended up slipping and falling when trying to walk up the cf resulting inthe barrel of water geting smashed, However, when this happened Dawsey and Christan collapsed with laughter, ven though they failed with their task and were on opposite sides (96). Instead of seeing this as something negative it would seem tht Dawsey was a happy person because he turned a negative situation into positive one and laughed it off instead of geting upset about it, Dawsey's happiness relates tothe article “What Suffering Does" by David Brooks specifically the quote, “Recovering from suffering isnot like recovering from a disease. Many people don't come cut healed they come out different” (286) When the Germans invaded Guernsey, it was inevitable \\ / that everyone suffered or was going to suffer at ong point during the occupation. Although Dawseys suffering changed him in a postive way because he became part of the literary society ————————— ‘and met his curent closest fiends, The war changed him along with many others forever, they will never forget what the war did to them. Although just beeause he didn’t come out healed he! came out surrounded by people he loves and in my opinion, having happy life, But even before the Occupation, Dawsey has had his fir share of suffering. In the novel Juliet found out, “Dawsey did not have @ very happy childhood, His father died when he was eleven, and Mrs ‘Adams, who'd always been poorly, grew odd. She became fearful, ist going into town, then of sing into her own yard, and finally, she wouldn't leave the house a ll. She would just sit in the kitchen, rocking and staring out at nothing Dawsey could ever see. She died shortly before the ‘war began.” (232) This must have been very traumatizing for Dawsey, especially s a child. One ‘can only imagine how painful it must have been. This tragedy would have made most people lose fith of ever finding happiness in life; but somehow, Dawsey was able to find it. But where he was able to find it was not somewhere or the time you would think he would, He was able to find that happiness during the war through people; specifically, the Iiterary group, Kit, and Juliet. {All people who were going through the same pain that he was going through, ‘Dawsey Adams is a man who has overcome a lt suffering with a positive outlook on it, Even though some may say he may not be a happy person do to all e has been through or experienced, he looks out for others he cares for and has been through a lot of suffering himself throughout his life which is why it has shaped him into the person he is. An example of him showing he is happy is when he wites to Juliet and talks about the damages caused by the Germans, saying “The town is pretty in spots though much oft was bombed and the Germans sot fire to it when they retreated, I cannot see how it will become a living town again, I came bback and sat on the terrace til ull dark, thinking about tomorrow.” (187) Seeing all the war {going on around him and how the war literally changed his home for worse, how he describes,
