Dear Mr Winkler, dear Classmates, today I want to tell you something about Equality.

First of all, I will clarify what equality is, then I will talk about gender equality and ratial equality
First of all, social equality is one of the most important things in human life and is rooted in the age
of enlightenment. The Age the Germans call Aufklärung. It was one of the three requirements of the
french revolution. I
I want to quote the first article of the universal declaration of human rights:

All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and
conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood.

In our History, but also nowadays, equality is a very big topic. Many people are discriminated in
many aspects, for excample women, black skinned people or homosexuals.

The equality of women in our society was an is a very frequently discussed topic. 100 years ago, it
was not widely believed that women are as intelligent as men. Many Jobs were just for men and
women were not allowed to vote or to absolve an education. In Switzerland women were not
allowed to vote until 1971. But also nowadays there are not many women in high positions in
companies and they get payed different than women. As you can see, according to the gender
inequality index, the USA are not really the best country.

Expecially in the USA, racial inequality was and is still a big topic. Until 1865 blacks were treated
as slaves. We watched „Five years a slave“ together, so all of you have got an idea of how horrible
the circumstances were. I think all of you know that in former times, nearly everything in the USA
was seperated for whites and blacks. The so called racial segregation. Black and whites were not
allowed to go in the same schools, sit next to each other in bus or go in the same theatre. The
segregation was officially ended under president Trumen in 1948, but until now, there are some
„Black“ Districts. Since 2008, Barck Obama is the first black US-President.

Thank you for your attention, feel free to ask.
