Multiplying Polynomials – Algebra 1

Essential Question: How do I multiply polynomials using the box method?

List of Materials: Worksheet packet, a pencil and eraser, scratch paper.
Grouping: N/A
NVACS:
- Connecting prior learning to today’s lesson.
- CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSA.APR.A.1 -Understand that polynomials form a system analogous to
the integers, namely, they are closed under the operations of addition, subtraction, and
multiplication; add, subtract, and multiply polynomials.
Objective: Students will be able to multiply polynomials using the box method
Introduction: I will review the previous day’s work of adding and subtracting polynomials.
Modeling: I will first do a problem myself, then show them a step-by-step process for using the box
method.
Guided Practice: I will hand out a sheet for them to do a few problems on it and I will be doing the same
problems on my own, then we will review the problems they did. I will also show them an example from
their worksheet packet the student’s choice.
Independent practice: After we went through the problems I will let them try it on their own with the
rest of the problems on the worksheet.
Closure action: At closing of the class I will ask them to wrap up the problem they were on and give back
the worksheet while they are walking out.
Assessment: They have a packet of different problems to do for the entire unit and on sheet is
dedicated to one section with at the most of 10 problems on it, as homework they will finish the page
for binomials.
