Dear Megan Scheldt,

My name is Emily Ellis, and I am a freshman Nursing major at Hope College. I would like to be
considered to participate in the DiscoverWork Program opportunity because I believe that it will
help me gain valuable experience in the nursing field. From this experience, I hope to gain a
better understanding of what type of nursing I would like to pursue, as well as what setting I
might like to work in. I believe that shadowing registered nurses will also help motivate me in
my studies by giving me a better understanding of what I am working toward and for.

I would choose the Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital because shadowing a nurse, as well as
meeting with a wide range of professionals in the medical field, such as a doctor (MD or DO),
physician assistant, nurse practitioner, pharmacist, phlebotomist, respiratory therapist, radiology
technician, and/or security officer would expand my knowledge of the various opportunities
available to me. Another reason I would choose this particular opportunity and location is I
would also be introduced to the emergency department nurse manager and educators. I would
also be able to attend staff and leadership meetings and could contribute to various department
committees working on projects involving patient and staff satisfaction, safety, process
improvement, and education.

truly believe I would be a great candidate because I am passionate about gaining experience in
the hospital setting, as my goals include getting a college education, earning my Bachelor of
