THE FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES Deperoens of English December 5, 2018 Letter of Evaluation for Tomas Cabezas Fall 2018 Internship ‘Tomas was an outstanding intern for me during the Fall 2018 semester. For this internship, ‘Tomas joined the Editing Workshop course I teach, supervising students through the reporting and ‘writing of news articles, editing their assignments, and helping with the class discussions. ‘Tomas first studied with me in the summer of 2018 in Valencia, Spain for a study abroad semester. He came to the program with experience in journalism, and he used that knowledge to produce a great profile of a Valencia entrepreneur and to succeed overall in the two classes. | was pleased when Tomas agreed to inter with me for this semester. He had five students under his direct supervision, and his responsibilities with them included communicating with the students in general to make sure they were on track and troubleshooting any issues for them, either during the process of gathering information or during the writing process. In addition, Tomas led a class discussion on multimedia journalism, and with just minimal input from me, he produced an educational and entertaining presentation, ‘The quality that makes Tomas stand out the most is his sincere desire to help students. His, ‘comments on their drafts were always spot on but encouraging, and he went out of his way several times to give students more in-depth feedback. He works with the Reading and Writing Center as an ‘undergraduate tutor as well, and his experience there carried over into my class. His copy editing skills ‘were sharp and he went beyond the “fix this, fix that” mode some student editors fall into. He gave reasons why students should revise their writing and he did this with a patient, helpful tone. ike most students, Tomas had plenty of other responsibilities as a student outside of this internship. But he was reliable in is commitment to the position and he always followed through on his assignments. In short, Tomas was an excellent intern this semester, and I appreciated everything he did for ‘me and for the students.
