Where Anonymity Breeds Contempt Summary

In this article, the Julie Zhuo debates that anonymity has been a significant problem to

society and there is a need for it to be banned. She goes ahead to explain that anonymity causes

online users to behave unethically because their identity is hidden. In some instances, even good

people tend to change their behavior as a result of the online disinhibition effect (Zhuo par.6).

Zhuo defines trolling as, “the act of posting inflammatory, derogatory or provocative messages

in public forums” (Zhuo par.3). Anonymity gives tyrants a chance to victimize many people,

without caring how their actions affect others. Thus, Zhuo gives her audience with a million

reasons why anonymity should be banned, and she also provides numerous solutions for the

audience to consider.
