STAINER & BELL L1, 58, Berners Street W.1.PREFACE
Musicians have bithesto had litle opportunity of estimating the tue valu ofthe keyboard works of Orlando
Gibbons. Overshadoved in his tie-tine by his greater contemporary, John Dull, Bis compositions were practically
excluded from several important vrginal books, vbether through jealousy or religions prejudice, ot both, cannot
tow be definately ascertained, Thus the Fitzwilliam M.S. cetains only the Pardtenie Peven vader his namehich
‘aust have been alteady published, although two fragments of other piesa are included anonymously N° 40,209)
‘About tn pieces are also found anonymously elsewhere, and several MSS, have one of erhaps two picees of his
‘under another composers name, including the published Prelude and Queenss Command. No otiex Tudor composer
has sutfered in this way in alike degree
During my years of virgins seach, nothing has been of greater interest than the gradual discovery andring-
{ng together ofthe works contained inthe present edition. The pieces, 52 in umber, ate arzanged in five books:
T Masks and tances, It Variations HI Pavans and Galliards, IV, V Fancos
have the honour to sy that HLM. Tho King has graciously granted me permission forthe publication of eight
pieces, 1, 8, I, 5,7, 9,1¥,4,¥, 17,28 th from the famous autograph manuscript of Benjamin Cosy.
‘The Governing Body of Christ Church have aiowed the publication of four piooos from MSSntheir possesion

resent publish
“The Diector of the New York Public Library has given permission for publication af fousteen pisces from MSS.
Drexel S62 and SOM, 14,2 0-12, I, 34,6 I, ¥, 1), ad of these similarly reserves the rights. From this
sure two beautiful pisces, the Ground in A minor, aad the Pavan in G minoy, have been recovered
Tho Director of the Library of tho Paris Conservatoire has given leave for publication of three pieces (4 1,
42) and also reserves the rights.
Moses Novello & C0 have courteously allowed me the vse of one fantasy published them, the MS.of which for
rely in De. Cammings possession, has passed to Japan and eannot now bo traced by the Impesalibearyt Tokyo
“The emander ofthe work ae ia the Hritish Museam
{All the great works of Gibbons excopting the Parente Fantasia foue part are her published forthe first
timo; the tuna-up, the Pavene in G minor aad D minor, Ws two Gatiards in Amino, aa the Fone in G minor.
Other first publistions ate Ztncotnes Tune Maske, mas in Oy Prch Ayr, Phe laien Grund, The Pare Hamp,

Woods soe wilde is published for the fest time init complete form avin Brit. Mus. Ad. MS. S666, and ia the
Fantesa of foure parte the orginal txt is restored, freed from the alterations made by Rimbult, whose edition
Sas hitherto boon th only one avaiable for zeproduction.
‘There ate two other Fanci, the authorship of which lies between Gibbons and Ball, Put 2s the evidence is ma
1y in favour ofthe lates these two pieces azeexelided. There exists viginal book atthe Paris Conservatoire
stated offically tobewrittnby Cosy. A small pat of i is by Cosy, but the remsindet i ina different and eater
hand, and may bea Hall autograph, This part eratans the two fantasies in question amonest a collection of Bas
Ienown works, The Aaneterappenr also in MSsH9,Christ Charch,Oxford;one athe rtf the’Darcks” (N° 90,01)
by Bul, the other is ane of tet of six anonymous plainsong fantasies all exactly similar in style thee of which
a proved to be Bulls. It is most unlikely that ono is by Gibbon, since the style a ot his. The ony contrary
evidence is supplied By Cosyo himself. Ia what we may term provisionally the Ball part of tae Paris MS. no com
poser’ names appear itis without beginning or ending, but Cosya has sepplied an Tndex othe whole book. Ta
{his index, tho plaa-S00s Fancy in question is set dow to Gibbons. But a known Coranto of Gibbons i at down
4 Crofurd, therefore we may take it that Cosyn in his old age was becoming a ile forgetfl. In any case virial
indoxes are sover wholly reliable. Tn the folio Caryn MS. a shortr version of the “Dorick” i given witht its ile
ashy Gibbons. This ¥ sega also as an eror, there Deing the evidence ofthe Christ Church MS. against it, and
the fact that the two "Doricks” dvinssy belong to each other and are found together also i the Paris MS
‘Two very smal volestaris aro found in anober Paris MS. sid-sevententh contary, as by"MF Gitbon”and are
tere included. A pice called Duro is aot by Gibbons, though it as been published as
Tn considering the work of tis composer, we must aot overlook the defects of our text. Not a single virginal
piece exists inthe handwriting of Gibbons, uals the transcriptions of eight of tke Wine Fandauie for Fits nthe
Now York Drexel MS.5612 ar hs, but as these are originally string trios, they do nt fall within the scope of
Aeyboard edition, We hae therefore no authoritative text. The editing of a single manuscript i a simple matter
compared with he problem ofa text based pon eeverl versions ll probaly differing in detail more of Tos. Out
a the twenty-two MSS. in which Gibbons pieces aco contained, the best versions are generally those of Cory, Christ
