Brass Techniques

Lesson Plan

Anchor Standard #8: Perform a varied repertoire of music by playing instruments. Beginning

P.8.B.1: Play and become aware of correct posture, characteristic tone quality, correct tuning,

and intonation, good breath support, and proper hand position.

Objectives- Students will be able to play jingle bells with all correct notes and rhythms.

Concept- Call and response

Title selection- Jingle Bells

Materials- Music, instruments, pencil.

Things to listen for- Trumpet solo at beginning. Call and response beginning. Tuba measure 7

and 8. Tempo at measure 17. Horn partials 17-end.

Procedure-

1. Ask to hear tubas first so all students hear the bass (and make sure they play accidental in

measure 8)

2. Try to play through the song first

3. Fix any big picture mistakes and dynamics

4. Ask who has the melody and make sure trumpets are good at beginning

5. Listen to the horns, euphoniums, and trombones at begging for call and response.

6. Mention call and response as concept and explain.


7. Add tubas (mention how they can bring out the ascending and descending lines)

8. Listen to everyone but tuba at 17. First note first.

9. Add tuba back in

10. Ask for any final questions

11. Play through one last time

Assessment- Will be informal with listening to individual parts and close attention while playing
in group.
