Fred Hoiberg

Iowa State

-I’m not a system guy.

§ We run actions based on strength of personnel
§ We look for a potential mismatch and attack it
§ Offense can drastically change from year-to-year depending on personnel

-You can’t just tell your guys to play fast. You need to work on your break every single
day.
§ Need to be committed

-Transition responsibilities:
§ 5 = rim-runner (beat your man down the floor)
§ 4 = designated inbounder
o On miss, 4/5 are interchangeable (whoever doesn’t get rebound is the
rim-runner)
§ 2/3 = no designated lanes, but you need to get down the floor into the deep
corner

-Flatten out the floor (2/3 to deep corners)

§ Give the point guard space. If you stop short at the wing, you crowd PG’s
driving lane.
§ If 1 beats his man, x2/x3 helping means a wide-open corner 3.

-Our primary is looking to probe the defense for quick scores (before trying to run
any secondary).

-We love transition 3’s before the defense is set.

-Hardest thing to guard is ball screens and DHOs

§ DHOs especially. You’ve eliminated one coverage (Ice) and they’re just really
hard to guard.
§ Get two guys to guard 1
§ Get your two best players on one side of the floor by themselves and have
them run 2-man game (ball screen or DHO).
-If we really like a certain action, we might try to get to that same action out of two
different sets.

-If we throw the ball ahead to a wing, he has to look in at the big to see if he’s open
for a seal.
§ You can’t ask your bigs to run the floor hard every time if you never look to
throw it to him.

-We work on our spacing every single day

§ It’s the most important thing we do.

-We love to run into drags out of transition

§ Puts stress on the defense right away
