Welcome to the 2018 Randall High School Band! As the head band
director, I am so excited that you have chosen to make marching band a part
of your high school experience. Let me share a few thoughts on why
marching band is so important:
BAND IS A GROUP EFFORT- Through various situations in Band
class, you are going to be learning to take responsibility for your actions,
actions that could very well affect the entire band. Band members will be
required to shift from an I/ME reasoning to a WE/US concept. The values of
cooperation, communication, concentration, and completion that are so
important to the success of the Randall High School Band come into play
each rehearsal and performance.
BAND CREATES SELF RESPECT- Although we share many
similarities with our athletic counterparts, BAND is a place for everyone.
Rarely is a person serving as an alternate or substitute. Everyone in the
Randall High School Band plays a starting role. YOU ARE IMPORTANT
TO THE SUCCESS OF THE RANDALL BAND.
BAND IS A COMMITMENT- The success of the Randall High
School Band is not measured by what we start, but by what we complete.
The important qualities of tenacity and persistence in classes such as band
establish habits for positive and productive living in your future.
BAND REQUIRES REFINEMENT- The refinement of our musical
skills is very important in the Randall High School Band. We are preparing
ourselves to appreciate and understand how band can refine our skills inside
and outside of Band Class.
The Randall High School Marching Band has a long history of
excellence and success. By being a part of this ensemble, you will grow as a
student, musician, and person. Thank you for joining us on this journey!
Sincerely,

RANDALL HIGH SCHOOL BAND MOTTO: RHS Band is a family who strives to
be the best they can be through hard work, dedication, and commitment.
MISSION STATEMENT:
Our goal is to equip students to grow as musicians, students, and people. By striving to
do the very best they can in marching band, students will learn the value of hard work,
importance of being a well-rounded musician, and the impact there is in being a part of
something bigger than yourself. We want to equip students with the skills needed to be
successful not only right now as a marching band member, but for long-term as well, in
their future jobs and lives.
PROGRAM GOALS:
1. Stewardship of instruments, equipment & time:
Instruments belong in the case in the instrument storage lockers. Each student will be
assigned a band locker. Instrument cases do not belong amongst the rehearsal chairs.
Leave the case in your band locker. Don’t leave instruments in the bleachers after pep
band performances. Store your music properly in the place provided. Protect our
rehearsal time so we can get the maximum from every class period. Please do not let
other things, such as cell phones or work from other classes interrupt our rehearsal.
2. Value:
Pep band and Marching Band is the best public relations tool a band program has. For
many of our school’s patrons the pep band is the only contact they have with the band
program. Their opinion of the band program is based solely on what they hear at ball
games. We will have about 18 to 20 pep band and marching band performances this year.
Each must be our best.
3. Loyalty:
Loyalty is a lost virtue in our society. Make every effort to be a faithful member of our
band, school, and community.
4. Tradition:
We have established a tradition of excellence in all aspects of our performance.
Resolve to give every rehearsal and performance your personal best.
5. Trust:
In order for our band to be successful, a bond of trust must be established between
students and director. As our band does more travel I must have increasing confidence in
your ability to act responsibly in all situations.
REHEARSAL EXPECTATIONS:
Come to rehearsal prepared and ready to work with a good attitude!
Practice your individual parts ahead of time. This way, we can accomplish more as a full
ensemble and put the individual parts together instead of spending time practicing.
Learn and memorize all music, drill, and commands.
Respect those around you.
Listen and follow orders with a positive attitude.
Keep talking to a minimum.
Always give your full effort in whatever you are doing.
4
ATTENDENCE:
Your attendance is required at all designated Randall High School Band events during the
school year. You are given a calendar of events at the start of the school year that you are
to share with your parents that show the dates that require your attendance. All
performances are required. However, f it is necessary to be absent from a performance,
these are the guidelines we will follow to determine your grade points for the missed
performance.
TYPE TWO: Family emergency absence from a performance– If for some reason there is
a family emergency other than death or your personal illness that requires your absence
from a performance, those grade points must be made up. Extra work will be assigned to
make up lost points. This extra work will be graded for content by Ms. Giles and then
assigned a grade, but you will only receive half credit for this type of absence. Be aware
that that assignment may receive a grade point total lower than the 100 points you would
have received for your attendance at the missed performance.
TYPE THREE: Unexcused absence from a performance– This type of absence will result
in the loss of all grade points for the missed performance and cannot be made up. The
student will face consequences outlined in the USD 482 activity policy you committed to
at the start of the school year.
5
ATTENDANCE AT REHEARSALS:
Tardiness will note be accepted. If you are late to a class, you will start the class
receiving only half of your daily participation points. If you are tardy to rehearsal, sign
into an attendance binder at the front of the class and write the reason why you are late
next to your name. If you foresee an absence or tardy, please email Ms. Giles in advance
or talk to her in person.
GRADING POLICY:
Daily rehearsal participation: 10 points per day
Minor Band performances (Basketball Pep Band): 10 points per event
Major performances (Marked in Bold on the calendar): 100 points per event! (contest,
home concerts, home football games)
Tests: written & playing 10 points per test
Students will receive a letter if they meet all of the following criteria:

Concert Band Auditions will take place during the first week of school in the fall
semester. Audition excerpts will be posted online prior to auditions.
LEADERSHIP POSITIONS:
These auditions will take place the Spring before the Marching Band season. An
application followed by an interview and playing test will be a part of the selection
process.
Concert Band:
1 Section Leader Per Section
This position will be assigned after fall auditions that will take place for concert band
during the first week of school.
EQUIPMENT:
Listed below are supply responsibilities for each instrument. Basic supplies are available
in the high school office or at the local music store. Please see Ms. Giles for specific
needs.
FLUTES: Pencil, Cleaning rod with rag, Music lyre, flip folder.
MUSIC LYRES: These are music holders that attach to your instrument to hold your
music for pep band and marching band. They may be purchased the first week of school
by notifying Ms. Giles.
INSTRUMENT RENTAL: All students who play a school instrument will be charged a
rental fee ($62.00) at the start of each school year to help cover the upkeep expenses.
The students will pay for repairs. In extenuating circumstances, students should talk to
the director.
7
CONCERT & CONTEST DRESS: Uniform attire is required for concert and contest
performance. This year, the high school will again be issued a marching band uniform at
the beginning year. It is your responsibility to alter and maintain the uniform. As part of
the uniform, marching shoes will be purchased at a cost of $25. There is no uniform
check-out fee, however no eating is allowed in the uniforms. Take good care of them and
treat them as your own. Students need to dry clean their uniforms themselves once a
month or more often if needed. It is your responsibility to take care of your uniform. An
alteration service will be suggested if needed.
For concert band and less formal concerts, we will wear black on black concert attire. For
men, this is a black button-down shirt or black polo and black slacks. Ladies can wear
black slacks, a black skirt at appropriate school length, a dressy black shirt, or an
appropriate-length black dress. No leggings will be allowed, and all concert dress clothes
have to follow school policies.
Students are encouraged to take private lessons to increase their musicianship and
individual playing skills. While directors are skilled instructors on the various
instruments in the band, there is no substitution for private instruction. We are very
fortunate to have many musicians offering private lessons in the area. If you are
interested in taking private lessons, please check the band website for a detailed list and
contact information or talk to Ms. Giles for more information.

Band Boosters
The Randall High School Marching Band has a very active, supportive parent
organization known as the Randall Marching Band Booster Association. The booster
association includes parents from band and color guard. Without the hard work and
dedication of the parents, the band program at Randall could not be as successful and
productive as it is. There are numerous areas in which interested parents can be involved
in supporting the activities of the band. General meetings of the boosters are held
throughout the school year; however, numerous committees do most of the booster
organization planning.
Members of the Randall Band Booster Association Executive Committee for 2018-2019

OFF CAMPUS TRAVEL POLICIES - GENERAL
Students who represent the Randall Bands on out-of-town trips are expected to
maintain very high standards in every respect at all times. They are expected to
attend and be on time for all sessions and activities scheduled for them. In the
event of overnight trips, they are expected to be in their rooms at the times
designated by their sponsors.
Each student will be responsible to one or more faculty sponsors who will
supervise the activities of the student for the trip. Negligence in attending sessions,
in meeting curfew requirements, or in failing to maintain our standards of conduct
may make it necessary for the sponsor to send the student home at his/her own
expense. Student conduct on school-related trips: Self-discipline is the key
element for a pleasant experience for both the sponsor and the student when the
student is on a school-related trip. Students who are involved in a serious
disciplinary offense on a school-related trip, such as the use, possession of, or
being under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol, stealing, fighting, going in
the room of a member of the opposite sex, or some other serious offense will face
disciplinary action which may include one or more of the following:
1. The student will be sent home from the trip at the parents’ expense.
2. The student will be held liable for damages to property.
3. The student may be removed from this school activity as well as other
school co-curricular activities.
4. The student may be placed in In-School-Suspension (ISS), Off-Campus-
Suspension, or Alternative Education Placement.
Students’ attire during school activities outside the school day should be in good
taste. If there is any question of taste, the director’s decision is final. All adults on
trips serve as sponsors. Students will be expected to treat them with respect at all
times. In the event a parent sponsor gives needed supervision, band students must
honor that with utmost respect.
GENERAL – Even though you will not always have a band shirt on, people will
find out where you are from. You have the opportunity to make a tremendous
name for Randall High School and for yourself. Be courteous and polite at all
times. There is no way we can anticipate every scenario, so we ask for good
judgement. Please use common sense. RULE OF THUMB: If there is any question
in your mind as to whether you should do something or not...DON’T DO IT! It is
better to be safe than sorry.
WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT THERE WILL BE NO PROBLEMS. IF WE
ANTICIPATED A PROBLEM, WE WOULD NOT TRAVEL.
