In order to take the right talent on board, the recruiters pose technical interviews apart from HR
processes. Technical interviews assess the professional’s hands-on experience and technical expertise.
A few of the interview questions on VMware Technology typically asked for an intermediate fresher
candidate have been discussed here along with its answers.
Hope these basic technical Q&As of an interview keeps you calm as you wait for the turn to get
interviewed.

VMware, being the virtualization leader needs no introduction. It is a known fact that it provides solutions
in the field of

Data center virtualization

Network virtualization

Desktop virtualization and

Cloud

The specialty of VMware is that it updates with the evolving technology. The versions represent the new
add-ons of the technology. And organizations have realized the potential of going virtual and is in the
constant hunt for subject matter experts.

So, it’s high time for you to get ready for the interview and grab the opportunity. A few common VMware
Interview questions and its answers in 2018 have been discussed here for your reference studies that
would help you to crack the technical round.
1. What favored you to opt for Virtualization?
Virtualization refers to the creation of virtual machines and its remote management. The virtual versions
of the physical components include the storage devices, network devices, servers, and, etc.

With virtualization, one is able to run multiple virtual machines on a single physical machine.

The main benefits of implementing virtualization include:

More than 50% of the total investment cost is reduced

Facilitates the operation of multiple operating systems on one virtual

platform

Wards-off the heavy hardware dependency for running the

application

Leads to high productivity with only a few servers

Cuts the need of physical environment [data center space] to a

greater extent

Minimizes or eliminates the downtime completely

Increases the productivity and agility of the IT

Enhances the efficiency and responsiveness

Provisioning of resources and applications are made faster

Disaster recovery is faster leading to business continuity

2. Well, you said the creation of virtual machine? How do you convert a
physical machine into a virtual machine?
The physical machine could be converted to a virtual machine in simple three steps. They are

Installation of an agent to the physical machine

Installation of VI client with converter plug-in

A server placed to import or export the virtual machines

3. What are the different types of virtualization?
The main types of virtualization include Server, Network, Storage, Application, and Desktop.

Application Virtualization: It increases the mobility of the

applications and facilitates migration of the VMs with lesser
downtime.

Desktop Virtualization: It is the virtualization of the desktop so as to

reduce the cost and increase of the service.

Network Virtualization: It completely reflects the physical network as

the software-defined network.

Server Virtualization: The multiple operating systems and the

physical server could be run on the single server.

Storage Virtualization: It gives the abstraction layer for the

resources of physical storage to get optimized in virtual deployment.

4. What is cold and hot migration?

Migration in VMware refers to the process of transferring the virtual machine from one host or storage
location to the other one. It is an added advantage for using the virtual machines. The migration could be
either hot or cold.

Hot migration refers to the transfer of the operating system and the applications to the physical
machines from the virtual machines while the OS or the applications still in its running stage. Whereas,
cold migration involves the suspended virtual machines or turned-off migration. The disks are moved
from one datastore to another.

5. What are VMware tools?

VMware tools represent a suite of utilities which enhance the performance of the virtual machines’ guest
operating system and the VM management.

6. How do you use the VMware tool?

Installation of the VMware tool eliminates or enhances the issues like

Inadequate color depth

Restricted mouse movement

Low video resolution

Incorrect Network display speed

Inability to drag-n-drop files or copy-paste

Syn the time of host and the guest operating system

Support the guest-bound calls

Ability to take quiesced snapshots of the guest OS

7. How do you differentiate a clone from that of a template?

Sr.
Clone Template
NO
Clone forms the exact copy of the It is the baseline image for the virtual machine

running VM having predefined configurations
Cloning creates the exact copy with Creation of template is creating a master image
2 same configurations and no additional from where multiple virtual machines could be

A clone is created by right-clicking the A template is created by converting/cloning a virtual

6 Clone is not converted back Template is converted back
Templates could not be created while
7 Clones could be created while powered on

8. What is a hypervisor?
A hypervisor or the virtual machine monitor is nothing but the computer firmware, hardware, or the
software which creates and runs the virtual machines. The computer on which the hypervisor runs is
called the host machine and the virtual machine is called the guest machine.

They are mainly of two types:

Type 1 or the Native/Bare metal Hypervisor: It runs directly on the hardware of the host and manage the
hardware and guest operating systems.

Apart from VMware ESX and ESXi, other hypervisor includes Microsoft hypervisor, Citrix XenServer,
Oracle VM, and, etc.

Type 2 or the Hosted Hypervisor: It runs on the conventional operational system.

Apart from VMware Workstation, VMware Server, other hypervisors include Microsoft Virtual PC, Oracle
VM Virtualbox, Red Hat Enterprise virtualization, and, etc.

9. What is Fault Tolerance?

VMware Fault Tolerance delivers continuous availability for the virtual machines even in an event of
failover condition by creating and maintaining the secondary VM that is identical to the primary VM and
is made available continuously. Fault Tolerance [FT] could be enabled for most of the virtual machines.

10. How do you secure the vCenter server and the users?
By authenticating the vCenter with the Active Directory, one can assign specific roles to the users and
thus manage the virtual environment efficiently and in a secure manner.

11. What is Virtual Desktop Infrastructure?

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure [VDI] hosts the desktop operating system on the centralized server in a
data center. It is also referred as server-based computing as it is the variation on the client-server
computing model.

The end user gets connected to their desktop by using the thin client. Moreover, the end user may get
connected to the desktop by using the VMware Horizon view.

12. How do you justify that VMware is for easy access?

VMware comes with several features that make the user easy for access and maintain. A few of the
features include:

Easy to use wizard for settings configuration

Web browser interface

Tools to create and maintain hosts

Easy maintenance of virtual machines

Configure VMware settings with easy graphics

13. What is the use of VMware Workstation?

Facilitates the user to run more than one operating systems on a single
system simultaneously

Saves the existing operating system’s configuration in the form of virtual

machines

Users may work on different OS even without switching between the

OSs.

14. How does virtual machine communicate from one server to the
other server?
The virtual machine communicate by using a virtual switch [vSwitch] /uplink adaptors. It uses the
physical NICs associated with the host server so as to connect the physical and virtual network.

15. What is virtual networking?

It is the network of virtual machines running on the physical server that are logically connected with each
other.

Bonus Question:

What are the disadvantages of VMware virtualization platform?

A few of the disadvantages include:

One must have the better understanding of the concept

It requires a huge investment to buy the resources

High-end server is required that increases the cost

Different technologies are required for implementation

System failures compensation is too costly with less reliability

I hope you have got a glimpse of the Interview. Though there may be other in-depth questions that might
be asked, these are basic knowledge one must know before attending an interview.
