I. 대학 소개

1. 연혁
고려대학교는 지난 1905년 대한제국의 재정 총괄 내장원경 충숙공 이용익
(1854~1907) 선생이 교육구국의 이념으로 고종 황제의 하사금을 받아 설립한
보성전문학교에 그 연원을 두고 있다. 보성전문학교는 곧이어 을사조약의 체결
과 이용익 선생의 망명으로 운영난을 겪으며 천도교 지도자였던 의암 손병희
(1861~1922) 선생이 경영권을 이어받았으나 일제의 탄압과 세계 대공황 등의
여파로 재정난을 벗어나지 못하였다. 그러던 중 인촌 김성수 선생이 일제 식민
지 관학과 맞설 수 있는 민립대학 설립의 원대한 꿈을 품고 학교를 인수하여 고
려대학교의 기반이 마련되었다. 특히 인촌 선생의 혼이 담긴 본관과 겨레의 정
성을 모아 건립한 중앙도서관은 대학 성장의 든든한 토대가 되었다. 해방 후인
1946년 종합대학교로 승격된 고려대학교는 대한민국 현대사에서 저항정신의 표
상으로 민족의 양심이자 비판적 지성의 역할을 해나갔으며 이는 1960년 4.19
혁명의 도화선이 되었던 4.18 고대학생 의거를 비롯한 숱한 민주화 항쟁으로 분
출되기도 하였다.

한편 학교법인은 1971년 우석학원 합병으로 의과대학과 부속병원을 확보하였

고, 1980년 충청남도 연기군 조치원읍 서창리에 세종캠퍼스를 건립함으로써 도
약의 행보를 이어나갔다. 또한 1990년대에는 녹지캠퍼스를 개발하고 의과대학
과 부속병원을 혜화동에서 안암동으로 이전하였으며 국내 최초로 산업체와 대학
및 연구소간의 합동 연구를 실현한 한국산학연종합연구원을 설립했다. 아울러
생명공학분야 전문인력 양성을 위한 생명공학원을 개원하고 첨단 연구장비 를
갖춘 기초과학지원센터를 유치하였으며, 국제문제를 연구하고 국제지역전문가를
육성하기 위한 국책대학원으로 국제대학원을 설립하여 21세기 과학고대, 세계고
대를 지향하는 기틀을 마련했다. 더불어 대운동장 부지에 지하주차장과 열람실
및 각종 편의시설, 잔디공원이 조성된 중앙광장을 준공함으로써 국내 대학 최초
로 지상에 자동차가 없는 쾌적한 캠퍼스를 구현하였다.

고려대학교는 2005년 개교 100주년을 전후하여 국내뿐만 아니라 세계적인 대

학으로 거듭났다. 1990년대 중후반 국제화 준비기를 거치며 다진 인프라를 디
딤돌로 삼아 영어강의를 대폭 확대하였으며, 외국인 교원을 충원하였다. 아울러
2004년 세계대학의 다자간 협력체인 U21(Universitas 21) 회원교가 되었고,
2005년에는 세계대학 총장 포럼을 개최하기도 하였다. 2008년에는 환태평양 대
학교류협의회(APRU)에 가입하였으며, 현재까지 90여 개 국가, 850여 개 대학
및 기관과 학술교류협정을 맺었다. 고려대학교는 현재 국제화 전진기지로서 중
국인민대학, 캐나다 UBC 등 세계적인 명문대학 내에 학생 기숙사를 보유하고
있으며, 안암 캠퍼스에는 외국인 교수 및 학생 전용 기숙사인 CJ International
House, Anam Global House를 갖추고 있다. 고려대학교는 명실공히 민족의 대
학으로서 그 고유한 정체성을 보존하면서도 세계적인 연구중심대학으로 나아가
기 위한 국제적 인지도와 실력을 갖추어나가고 있다.

1) 제2전공 의무화
고려대학교가 국내 최초로 시행한 제2전공 의무화는 학문융합적인 시각
을 갖도록 하기 위함입니다. 지식분야가 다양화되어 학문간의 유기적

수 있도록 여러 학문적인 이해를 도모하는 것입니다.

나. 연구와 교육환경을 위한 끊임없는 열정과 노력

1) 창의적이며 효율적인 교수법을 발견하기 위한 노력들
교원들의 교육능력 향상을 위한 다양한 프로그램이 운영되고 있습니다.
FLCs(Faculty Learning Communities)는 교수들이 자발적으로 모임을
형성하여 강의와 관련된 문제 해결방안을 모색, 적용함으로써 창의적인
교수법을 발견하는 프로그램입니다. 강의 컨설팅 프로그램은 각 교수의
상황에 맞는 교수법을 제공해 주는 개인별 맞춤형 프로그램으로서 교육
전문가와 함께하는 1:1 코칭, 자신의 강의 모습을 직접 관찰하고 개선
점을 찾아가는 마이크로티칭 등이 있습니다. 또한 소그룹 교수법 워크
숍은 영어강의를 비롯한 다양한 교수법 및 수업운영 방법에 대한 정보
를 습득하고 공유하는 프로그램입니다.

2) 수준 높은 전공교육
전공교육과정의 질적 향상을 위한 고대의 경쟁력은 단연 앞서갑니다.
대학원의 연구지도 수준의 지도교수제 형태인 학부생 전공지도교수제,

21 강의실
고대의 강의실은 시대의 변화와 요구에 맞춰 기존 교수중심의 주입식
강의방식이 아닌 학생들의 활발한 참여를 통해 진행되는 토론식 강의를
지원하는 공간으로 업그레이드되고 있습니다. 특히 LG-POSCO 경영관
내 중 대형 강의실들은 실내에 집음 및 확성장치를 장착, 마이크 없는
수업이 가능하도록 설계하여 세계 최고 수준의 교육환경을 구축하고 있

다. 세계고대의 역사를 이어갈 지혜로운 글로벌 리더 양성

1) 교양교육실이 제시하는 스스로의 가능성을 발견하는 기회
대학의 교양교육은 전공교육, 나아가서 성공적인 진로와도 직결되며 자
신의 가능성을 발견하는 지적 모험의 기회가 되어야 합니다. 고려대학
교는 2009년 교양교육원을 신설하고 교양교육의 혁신을 추진해왔습니
다. 학생들은 1학년 때부터 여러 분야에 걸쳐 전반적인 소양교육을 받

라. 세계 명문대 수업시스템 적용
1) 고대 안의 국제화 대표 프로그램, 국제하계대학
2004년에 시작된 국제하계대학에서는 60여 명의 세계 정상급 교수들의
명강의와 한국을 소개하는 체험 커리큘럼이 펼쳐지고 있습니다. 매년
여름 전세계 1,800여 명의 대학생이 120여 개의 과목을 수강하며, 모
든 과목의 강의는 영어로 진행됩니다.

2) 외국인 교환학생(SEP)과
(SEP) 함께하는 글로벌 캠퍼스 체험
매년 1,000명이 넘는 외국인 교환 방문학생이 찾아오는 고대는 다양
한 국제 교류가 가능한 글로벌 캠퍼스로 성장하고 있습니다. 특히 외국
인 교환학생이 각 나라를 대표하는 민간대사가 되어 세계의 음식, 문화
를 소개하는 International Student’s Festival은 3,000여 명이 참여하는
캠퍼스 최대의 글로벌 축제입니다.

3) 진정한 국제교류의 기회 열어주는 외국인 학생 전용 GSC

외국인 학생 전용상담시설인 Global Service Center는 고대를 찾은 외국
인 학생들이 수강신청과 같은 학사업무에서부터 한국 문화 및 학교생활
적응을 돕기 위한 곳입니다. 다양한 문화이벤트 공지와 함께 외국인 학
생에게 도움이 되는 간행물 등이 비치되어 있으며, 언제든지 인터넷 사

I. About Korea University

1. KU History
Korea University was born as “Bosung College” in 1905. With a Royal grant
from Emperor Gojong of the Korean Empire, Lee Yong-ik, Treasurer of the Royal
Household, established the school under the banner, “Education Saves the Country.”
In the wake of the Korea-Japan Treaty in 1905, however, Lee Yong-ik sought asylum
overseas to lead the resistance movement against Japan, which in turn posed a
challenge to the management of Bosung College. Although Sohn Byung-hee, the
leader of Cheondogyo, succeeded to the leadership vacated by Lee, Japanese
imperial repression and the Great Depression aggravated the school’s financial
predicament. Kim Seong-su took over Bosung College and laid the foundation on
which Korea University would arise. He aspired to build a genuine national
university in response to the public schools, which the Japanese Empire manipulated
to disseminate propaganda. In particular, the Main Hall, embodying the spirit of
Inchon, and Main Library were constructed through funding raised across the
country and served as strong buttresses for the growth of the university. Following
national liberation in 1945, the college was elevated to the status of a university in
1946 and renamed Korea University. Throughout the modern history of the Republic
of Korea, Korea University has stood as a symbol of the spirit of resistance,
manifesting the conscience of the nation and critical intelligence. This spirit led to a
number of uprisings and protests by KU students calling for democracy, including
one on April 18th, which triggered the April 19 Revolution in 1960.

Later, the Korea University Foundation acquired Woosuk University in 1971,

thus incorporating its College of Medicine and affiliated hospital. In 1980, the
Sejong Campus was constructed in Seochang-ri, Jochiwon-eup, Yeongi-county, South
Chungcheong Province, reflecting the continued advancement of the University. In
addition, in the 1990s, the Green Campus was built, and the College of Medicine
and auxiliary hospital were relocated from Hyehwa-dong to Anam-dong. At the
same time, the Korean Techno Complex was stablished to realize collaborative
research by business, research institutes and university for the first time in Korea.
Furthermore, Korea University established the School of Life Science and
Biotechnology to foster professional human resources in the bioscience area, hosted
the Seoul Center of the Korea Basic Science Institute, replete with cutting-edge
research equipment, and opened the Graduate School of International Studies to
nurture professionals in international and local studies. These endeavors paved the
way for KU to join the ranks of leading global universities in science and other
areas in the 21st century. In addition, the refreshing and pleasant Anam Campus
without cars was the first to be created in Korea, thanks to the construction of the
Central Plaza under the grass park over what was once the main athletic field. The
nderground plaza consists of multi-level parking, reading rooms and various
convenience facilities. Ushering in the centennial anniversary in 2005 brought
momentum to Korea University to transform itself from a leading domestic
university to a globally prominent one. The infrastructure built during the
preparation phase for globalization in the mid to late 1990s served as a stepping
stone to significantly extend English classes and add international faculty members.
In addition, Korea University joined Universitas 21, the multilateral global body of
universities for cooperation in 2004, held the 2004 International Forum for University
Students and became a member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities
(APRU) in 2008. Korea University has concluded academic exchange agreements with
at least 850 universities and institutes in over 90 countries. As bridgeheads for
globalization, dormitories have been established at prestigious international
universities, including China’s Remin University and Canada’s University of British
Columbia (UBC), as well as on the Anam Campus, such as the CJ International
House and Anam Global House to exclusively accommodate international professors
and students. Korea University, treasuring its proud and unique identity as the
nation’s leading university, continues to widen and deepen its recognition and
capabilities around the world to become a leading globally-focused, research-driven
university.

Live on campus
There is an excellent supply of accommodation both on and off-campus. The
University recommends the newly built and modern Anam Global House or
Frontier Hall for first year students, particularly those moving away from home
for the first time.
Nestled in lush mountain-side greenery, KU’s on-campus housing provides
furnished rooms (including bed, desk, chair and bookshelf), high-speed internet,
24-hour and year-round security/reception to assist anyone who needs help,
shared common rooms, in-house laundry rooms, study space and various social
activities and so on. All KU halls of residences are smoke free.
Centrally located in Seoul, there are shops, restaurants, cafes of all kinds and two
subway stations within 5-10 minutes of walking distance nearby the campus.
Two subway stations conveniently located on both ends of campus, KU station

※ Documents which are not in Korean or English should be translated and notarized in
Korean or English.

3. Important Notes
1) Admission will be canceled if a student who has been granted admission is
found to have applied through illegal means, such as submission of
false/forged documents or altered representation of application eligibility.
2) Evaluation scores for admission will not be disclosed.
3) All documents should be in English or Korean. Documents in another
language should be accompanied by a notarized English or Korean translation.
4) Applications should be accompanied by supporting documents.
5) Other details regarding application process and review will be determined by
the Admissions Assessment Committee pursuant to our admissions procedure
and regulations.
6) There will be conditional enrollment based on language proficiency for
admitted students.
 <Intensive Korean Language Program and Restrictions on Major Course Enrollment>
Admitted students might have enrolment restrictions based on the submitted
TOPIK score or the level completed at the Korean Language Center at Korea
University or other universities.

Korean Language Level Korean Language Training Course Enrollment

∙ TOPIK level 5-6
No training No restrictions
∙ KU KLC level 5-6
Up to 6 credits per regular semester
∙ TOPIK level 4 1 semester of obligatory (Students are allowed to enroll in
∙ KU KLC level 4 training general education courses and earn
up to 19 credits per semester.)
Not allowed to enroll in major courses
∙ TOPIK level 3 or lower 2 semesters of obligatory (Students are allowed to enroll in
∙ KU KLC level 3 or lower training general education courses and earn
up to 19 credits per semester.)

Once students choose the final university to study, they will be given
instructions and be notified of their level of Korean language class at KU by
email.
