Topic Proposal

This year, I hope to study the junction point of medicine and engineering; I would like to

learn more about the field of bioengineering. My passions lie in scientific research, creative

thinking, and presentational speaking, and through my study this year, I hope to explore the

field’s specialties.

Having been a health science enthusiast for a long time, I have a natural affinity for

helping people. However, through my clinical experiences, I realized that I enjoy healthcare as a

hobby and that it is too structured for me to enjoy as a profession. I would like to pursue

something that is always evolving, something that changes the current flow of things. What

improves healthcare in the long run better than innovating new biotechnologies? I was first

introduced to this futuristic field when I competed in a HOSA competitive event entitled

“Medical Innovation.” The innovation I studied was the Skin Gun, a device that treats burn

patients with stem cells.

After the competition, aspects of the field seemed to jump out at me in various summer

camps and medicine-related workshops that I attended. Ultimately, it was AP Biology that

solidified my passion. With a teacher that taught his students more than just photosynthesis, I

was able to learn more about new biological solutions that are (or will be) on the market.

Furthermore, we were often dragged into heated debates and discussions over potential

biotechnologies, and these collaborative activities led me to idolize bioengineering as a

profession.

In Biology, when asked to draft alternative solutions, I realized how much I enjoyed

creative problem solving. I’ve been an art student for practically my entire life, and creativity
comes naturally to me. Furthermore, in a personality test, I learned that my energy is very

intuitive: I am imaginative, open-minded, and curious, and I focus on future possibilities.I’ve

also always had an inclination towards the biomedical sciences, and this is reflected in my high

school transcripts: health science clinical, anatomy and physiology, medical microbiology. Being

creative and obsessed with biomedical science is prerequisite enough for bioengineering, but this

year in ISM, one of my goals is to uncover specialties within the field that endorse my third

passion: public speaking.

I hope to therefore look into the niche field of bioproduct marketing.
