India is a land of saints and sages, great men, virtuous and
exemplary women. In this land was born a virtuous and lovely
woman, Ahalya. Her name is remembered as the foremost among
women in beauty, virtuousness and devotion and stands as a
towering example in holiness and the capacity to endure hardship
in the midst of trials and tribulation of life.
Ahalya was the wife of a great and famous sage called Gautama.
A saintly woman of the purest conduct, she was vindictively cheated
by the cunning Indra, the king of the gods.
Gautama knew very well that though his wife’s physical body was
apparently tarnished, her pure soul remained untainted, Yet,
knowing that penance raises the mortal from the mire of ignorance
to the sublime heights of spiritual grandeur, he urged his wife to
undergo rigorous discipline and accepted her after her release.
